Flex?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I need some advice. I need to know about some different flex's. I play Right Wing right now and I'v been using about 100 flex and I can't complain too much. However, I was thinking of trying out an 85 flex because I don't really have much of a slapper and I primarily use a snapper or a wrister. I am a fairly strong guy now and I was just wondering would 85 (easton flex) be too weak for someone like me or would it hold up well and give me alittle more zip on the wrister? Also is the 87 NBH flex really closer to an 85 because I was told by a guy at Sportchek (HAHAHA) that it was closer to a 95-100 (easton flex). I have a wooden NBH One 20 stick I really like and I find my wrister seems to have just about the same amount of power with that as it does with my synergy 300 100 flex.

Your best bet would be to try out a friend's 85 flex stick at a practice/openhockey/whatever.

I was considering going to an 85 flex, but I can actually feel the shaft flex on shots, hard passes, dump ins. If you can feel the stick flex a bit, chances are it's doing its job.

a bauer 87 is like an easton 85. If a guy like brett hull can use a 75 flex you can use an 85 flex. Whether it will be better for you... well you'll just have to try it.

Thanks guys. Very helpfull. Yeah I also have a 95 easton flex synergy 200 I like to use and I cut it down about an inch so I assume it's closer to 100 now and I could notice some flex while doing some hard passing. Felt kind of funny but I'm sure I could get used to it. I might consider trying an older model NBH like an XX or just something cheap like a VII to see how that goes. I just bought an Easton Stealth '05 100 flex with a gaborik curve so I'll see how that works out (haven't used it on ice yet). Once again, I appreciate the information.

How heavy are you? The veeery general rule of thumb is that the flex should be half your weight, so someone 200lbs would use a 100flex. HAving said that, I'm 210 and I use and 85 and I really like. Its something to think about.

Don't use a rule of thumb and just go with what's feeling right for you.

I'm 6'1" and about 200. So apparently I'm using the right stick haha. It's all good because I play defense as well but I have a seperate stick for that (I use about a 60" 45 kbp Koho revolution stick). On that, what is that comparable to?

Like what was just said, considering your height and weight, seems like you already have the right flex, but why not try something out and see what happens, if you don't like it, you always have the sell forum.

I'm 6'1", 195 and am fairly strong. I use an 85 flex CCM Vector. I found it's the perfect flex for me, since most of my shots are snap shots from around the hash marks. It gives a real nice whip to the shot, and you can feel it flex. If i'm playing defense, I use a 100 flex mission, because the CCM is a little too flexible for hard slappers from the point. If you don't take slap shots, I'd say go with the 85.

Do you find a whippier flex makes it harder to stick handle?

imo, definately not.

i can stickhandle the same with my 85,65, and 75 flex sticks.

True, but my wristers tend to flutter w/ a whip flex. Snaps a little too, but not as bad.

Experimenting w/ $200.00 sticks is fun!!!!!

Yes, but it's nothing major or that detrimental. I can feel a looseness to it when I try with a whippier flex. <3 120s.

I guess I'll just borrow a friends 85 and use it a couple times. I'm sure it wont be that hard to get used to, I find my 95 flex flex's a bit when I'm doing some firm passing anyway. Thanks for the help guys.

Depends on how smooth your stick handling is. I don't really notice much difference between the 85 and 100 flex sticks that's worth sacrificing the whip on the shot. I tend not to try and work my way through traffic on the ice though, so I don't need superior stick handling skills, or to worry about the whip while doing so. If you're weaving in and out a lot, you might want to consider the whip you'd be getting while stick handling.

If you're using high end intermediates, I dont think they'd have any fiberglass (or any more fiberglass) than their Sr. Counterparts. ie Sr. Stealth vs. Int. stealth or Sr. Dolomite vs. Int. Dolomite (I know you've used both of these in the past.) probably dont have fiberglass in either.

Not to jack this thread or anything, but I am about 5'5'' and 115lbs and almost 16yo(yeah I'm small). I have been looking at sticks around $100 to $150. I like the nbh 170. I have always used stiff sticks, only beause they were hand-me-downs. But recently bought a sherwood 5030 in an 85 flex. I helped me while it worked, but it had a defect so the blade broken after about the 4th use. SO I am looking for a new stick and I was wondering what the best flex would be. Either the 67, 77 or 85. I will be cutting the shaft down quite a bit, like 4 inches. So I was leaning toward the 77, but then I heard about many 200+lb guys suing an 85. So I was considering the 67. WHat do you guys think. I know its personal preference, but I just wanted someone elses imput. Thanks

Well sounds like you're good to go with a 100 or 85. I'd go with whatever felt better. Don't be worried about stiffness if it hasn't bothered you yet.

It'll have more snap to it, but its consistency goes to hell after a couple sessions. If it felt great when you first used it, the 85 in a composite is what I'd go with.

A lot of people use sticks that are too stiff. It's some sort of macho thing with kids that by using a stiffer stick they are more manly. Obviously there are those rare cases of guys like Chara or you that need absurdly stiff sticks to make up for some genetics gone haywire ;) but that's not the norm.
