So which one of you took our spot at the lake?!

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember me posting about how we found a spot for pond hockey at Panther Hollow Lake in Schenley Park. We had a bucket brigade and then poured water over a big spot of the lake. Then it snowed and it probably covered up our work.

So my brother and me go back today and notice that our spot has some great ice on it. Someone probably expounded on what we did and we noticed that someone had already skated on it. I figure that that person might be on this board since I posted about Panther Hollow Lake on here.

If you're here, how did you get the ice to be so good? Do you have a pressure hose or something?

down in florida we get hurricane days... kinda sucks because you can't go make snow angels in the middle of a tropical storm :(

...but flying kites is really easy with 40+ mph winds! :D

Hey sop, does pouring water on the ice get rid of the snow effectively?

No it will make for crap ice. Try to brush off as much of the snow as you can, unless you can get some warm water, and enough of it that it will melt the snow completely before it freezes. some on the guys who have backyard rinks can chime in.

This site gives some good tips.

http://www.hpurchase.com/lakerink.htm

Today was another great one for pond hockey in Pittsburgh.

"I have read many times that hot water makes for a stronger, smoother ice surface. It won't chip up like a surface made from cold water. But I have also read that cold water builds up the ice depth better. This makes sense because hot water will evaporate more than cold water will thus leaving less water on the surface to freeze. In light of that ... hot water floods would be best just before a skating session and the cold water floods would be best when flooding several times in a row, trying to build up ice depth."
