Stick wax question...

Recommended Posts

the first and best stick wax i have ever used was made by freddie fresh puck, but i haven't been able to find it anywhere. it was not as soft as the easton stuff i've been using now. all you had to do was rub it on and go. the easton stuff i usually have to work it into the tape with my fingers or go over the blade with a hair dryer to smooth it out. if anyone has any idea of where to get the freddie stuff please post here.

i don't know where you are from but my lhs here in edmonton carries this stuff along with zogs....united cycle

The cold water wax is actually softer as wax in cold temps tend to harden and thus lose its ability to provide traction. So - it is a softer compound desgined to stay pliable and sticky in cold water.

The tropical/warm water wax is a harder mix designed to keep your bumps solid and tacky without becoming goo in the sun and warm water environs.

I prefer the warm water wax on my stick as it does not clump up like softer wax can.

My personal favorite is Sticky Bumps.

good info in the surf wax. like i said i don't think it makes a big difference for hockey purposes... i wish i lived somewhere that i could have grown up surfing, but i guess then i might not have grown up playing hockey, so i guess its more than a fair trade...

ya i find them all to be just about the same. i bought some stick doctor wax once though, it was it a tube like deoderant. it ended upworking really bad. it was full of clumps, had an ugly yellow colour and costed me like 8 bucks. so now I just use dollar store candles or borrow my friends mr zog.

if it was, i borrowed some from a guy at the arena last weekend when i forgot to wax my stick, and the stuff was TERRIBLE...didn't work at all and is double the price of a zogs puck here

My stepmum had a box of long candles she had no use for. Waxed up the entire stick, grip, and tape and torched it with a lighter. Hopefully it will get some use over the weekend and I'll see how things go.

So I take it nobody here uses friction tape?

Wouldn't the wax ruin the whole point of friction...if you do use friction tape?

friction tape is pretty good but I don't use it too often for a few reasons:

1) thicker and heavier than regular cloth tape.

2) soaks up pretty bad so I don't use it at rinks where the snow melts quick

3) can be more expensive than cloth tape

on the other hand, I kind of like the friction it provided and also the tape job lasts longer than most conventional cloth tape.

Although you are not supposed to use wax on friction tape I applied a light layer of wax to try and repel snow build up

I try not to use candle wax for a couple of reasons, they are too soft and makes the surface area too slippery for my taste. I see these players who apply mounds and mounds of candle wax. They are so happy that their stick blade tape is so smooth and well protected. It may be well protected, but I think they have lost most if not all of the friction/control from the hockey tape.

I personally use skateboarder's wax. I saw some skateboarder dudes using some bars of special wax on the bottom of their boards. The stuff is harder and more dense. I tried applying it to my hockey blade tape and I was pleasenty surprised with ther results. You only need a thin layer but it does a very good job of repelling snow build up. I highly recommend people try the hard wax bars for skiing or skate boards. For me, I will never use the candles again. The only disadvantage I can think of using this type of wax is you have to rub the wax harder onto the tape because its more dense than candle wax.

Yeah I played hockey as a kid - then ended up down in NC and our locale didn't have a rink until about 3 years ago. Sucked not being able to play for so long. I must say it is a little weird to go surfing on a 90 degree summer day and then immediately head to the rink for a game. Your brain does a little of this --> trying to adjust....

I've always found that snowboard wax works awesome. It's really hard and it's relatively tacky. It's all pp but I've tried out Mr. Zogs and didn't quite like it. I've tried candle wax and it wasn't tacky enough. In the end, I guess you just have to try a couple of things out.

I picked up a box of gulfwax and have been using it with pretty good success. Scrubbing a bit on the tape and then melting with a torch keeps the snow off for a while.

Thats what I have and I have no problems with it at all, it doesnt clump at all and it seems to work really good for me, and its really good for grip on the shaft also I have found.
