RBK Pump vs. Vector

Recommended Posts

I'm getting new skates, and I have it narrowed down to the pump and the vector. Which model depends on how much I'm willing to pay. Now, I'm going to my LHS soon to try them on, but anybody have anything to say about either before I go?

is that...a good thing?

also, the good lookiness could go either way in my opinion.

but if you could, go for the bauer xxx they are amazing

I would if I had the money

anyways, I kinda focused on the vector and the pump because of replaceable blades, but also other stuff. Thanks guys, I'll go for the vector at my LHS tomorrow.

man i wouldnt ive tried alot of skates and the thing ive found the most comfortable and pretty good lookin would have to be graffs, they mold to your feet and everything and light and the inside is gel and i know of tons of goalies that use them and id say you should go for them

well technically you could take a cowling and put it on a one90 skate.

Last I heard the Vapor XXXs had some issues with their steel and cowlings, many were replacing them with the XXs cowlings and were much better off. I have also heard some bad stories about the pump on the RBKs.

I was thinking of trying that with a flexlite boot, because the flexlite are low cut skates, i never got around to it though

As goaltenders have evolved, one of the biggest adjustments that has occurred is the desire for sharp skates. The problem with fulfilling this newfound need has been the distortion of the goalie's "steel" or blade. New position-specific movements that have arisen require extremely sharp skates in order to anchor these moves. Therefore, goaltenders have shifted to a frequesnt sharpeneing mode. As these sharpens pile up, the blade is badly distorted. Regardless of sharpener or operator, the goalie's skate inevitably gets rockered and reduces blade contact and power.

The solution is interchangeable blades. Now, goaltenders do not need to suffer with bad "steel". Additionally, parents do not need to rush out and spend a small fotune on a new set of skates. Instead, three screws are taken out, the old blades removed and the new blades inserted and tightened. For a much lower price, goalies, at all levels of play, can have effective "steel" on their skates.

This was in a goalie magazine. Is this true? Something to worry about? Because the only decent goal skates (2006 model and later) at my LHS are the XXX and the Graf 750, it better not be.

Also, do you think that I could fit with simular brands to figure out my size? If I tried out a RBK or CCM player skate, and found my size, would that be transferable to goalie skates? My guess is no, but I just wanted to ask you guys.

I believe that skate cowlings were also available at one paint for replacement, and may still be.

Further, when the radius of the skate has been damaged by frequent sharpenings, all it takes is a profile job to fix it.

Good skate sharpeners will be able to remove steel to fix the problems

mentioned in the quote. Basically it'll repair the contour of the blade to match what it originally was, or fine tune it for your playing style.

Actually a better word would have been to radius the skates, as that would simply regain the blade's original contour, and involves less work.

cowlings by themselves are available. Which is why the Vapor XX cowling on the Vapor XXX boot is somewhat cost effective. Hopefully in the past few months NBH has fixed the issue with the cowlings. I honestly don't know whether they have or have not addressed this issue.

Check out Graf 750s if durability is important.
