greatone 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2007 Any recommendations on High Level summer hockey camps??? They all sound great when you read about them, however, after attending the camp, you realize that the camp was nothing special. AAA midgets/Bantams age group. TheSnake22 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2007 Obviously it depends on where you live. The only one i can speak for personally is the Miami University Summer Hockey School. I went there as a camper for about 5 years and it was probably the biggest reason i developed from squirt B to midget AAA. I also worked there as a counselor for 3 summers and attended college there. If you're a goaltender, i would recommend this program even more, as you get a chance to work with Mitch Korn, one of the best goaltending coaches anywhere in the country. He was Hasek's coach in buffalo when he won 3 vezina's, and has been the goaltender coach in nashville for the past 8 years. You also might want to check some of his other goalie only clinics. As for the Camp, i think it's probably better for the younger age groups, squirts, peweees and maybe bantams. the oldest age group is kinda watered down in talent, but the instruction is just as good. Any questions feel free to PM.
biff44 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2007 The problem with many (maybe most) of the camps is that there is little individual attention. You can be out there doing the wrong thing over and over, at a very fast pace, and never have an instructor come over and say "I was watching and you were doing this, but should be doing it this way.....".I think the best bang for a buck is on individualized training. In most any hockey rink in the world, there are also figure skating instructors. And you know what, on things like edge work and balance, they simply can not be beat! And for the most part they are cheap! For maybe $50 a session, after 10 sessions they will have you skating upright and smoothly! Practice the drills they give you on some open ice sessions, and in a year or two the scouts will be saying "wow, that kid XXX has some wheels"!Now, as far as power skating, you probably need to go to a different camp for that (laura stamm, huron hockey, Steve Serdachny, Burgraff skating, Dynamic skating, etc). But ONLY after you know how to use your edges! You should be able to go from one end of the rink to the other on one skate without touching down with the other one!Shooting, once again, get some individual instruction. There are a lot of shops around where they have a 1/3 rink in synthetic ice, some with video cameras, etc. You can shoot over and over again and if you have some bad habits they will point them out to you. Stickhandling, that is one you have to do on the ice. I would recommend a Turcotte or Sean Skinner clinic for that.

Langenbrunner15 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2007 Dynamic Skating is great. I did the Forwards / Defensemen Camp and it was by far the best camp I went to. I improved by so much in my skating, and hockey positioning after I went there too. Also, the strength and conditioning there is pretty good as well. Highly recommended. moose77 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2007 Does anyone here have experience with Rick Heinz Hockey Schools? My 8-year old is looking to attend his first real hockey school this summer and this particular school will be at our rink for a week in July. Originally I was thinking of taking him to Penticton,BC to Okanagan Hockey School but two things may be working against this: oldest son may have to attend 5 weeks of summer school and I've read from some folks on MSH that OHS isn't anything exceptional compared to other schools.A friend of mine from way back attended OHS in the very early 1980s and said it was a great experience. But like I said, I searched Okanagan Hockey School on this site just to see what people said and it sounds like it may not be what it once was. I was also looking forward to a sun-drenched week in Penticton, but I may just stay home if the Rick Heinz schools are any good. Thanks!

kin1013 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 You know.. Hong Kong is doing this too.. have camp for the locals and importing coaches from around the world to teach!!which is much less then sending a player to any foreign camp!! We brought in Finland coach and about to bring in Sean Skinner, but suddenly he is unavailable to come, so he is sending another one to replace him!! Should be good!! moose77 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 I always liked UBC.Now that's a thought! Although I'm not sure if/when they're having it this year since their home rink (Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre) no longer exists. It's being replaced with what will be a venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

sk8 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2007 The camp is definately worth the money. The staff can develop mites through professional caliber players. If you have the desire to improve and put in the effort they will maximize your potential. It's a fun time with alot of on ice and dryland training.
Rosey 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2008 Sorry for dragging this one up again, but summer is approaching. I registered for the Rick Heinz goalie camp in Anchorage this summer (I got asked to try out for the college team and want to improve a ton before September.) I signed up for the advanced one, but I'm 22 and I think I'll feel weird skating with a bunch of twelve year olds. What is generally the age spread at these camps? sjsharks11 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 I went to prep school this year and I was wondering if anyone who knew the level of hockey played here, could recommend a camp that had the same or a higher level, in terms of game quickness etc. I've heard about NHT (National Hockey Training) but don't know that much about it so if anyone had more info on that as well that would be great. Thanks
