need help-looking to buy ice skates in the $240 range

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy skates for the first time and start playing Ice hockey-

I have been playing roller since I was 13 and want to play ice

I have always had high end roller skates- but dont want to buy a pair more than 250

I was looking at the RBK 5k pump or Bauer Vapor XIX

does anyone have an opinion on these 2 or the comparison?

Also any other recommedations for that price range

Thanks in advance

I got my Easton 800Cs for about $250 in mid December. I'm really happy with them so far. I wasn't sure how I would like the composite boot but I've had no problems with it.

What you get depends alot on your foot type. You would probably be best off getting something similar to whatever you use for roller.

Totally different fit really. If one of them fits your foot well, the other one most likely wont...

I was going to say the same thing, but I think the 5ks would be a better fit and I detest the Vapor line of skates. Unless you're a pro looking for an extremely light pair of skates and not care about durability issues, than by all means, get the Vapor, otherwise get yourself a pair of Graf 705s or something that is comfortable that you can wear for beer league/rec/house league play. Most people dont want to buy a new pair of skates every year after you've had kids, student loan payments, mortgages etc. Get the more durable boot if you want to play in them for a 2-3 years.

How in the world can YOU possibly know what would fit HIM??? Have you seen his feet?

And, as far as I have heard, there are no durability issues with the Vapor XIX skate. You have just dissed an entire line of skates with absolutely no facts to back it up.

I've tried on a lot of Vapors and disliked each pair I've tried on immensely, but I've yet to try on the Vapor XXXXs though. The only Bauer's I've liked were the 8090s and my old Supreme 4000s. If you're all too worried about skate weight, maybe you should refine your skating stride perhaps?

I tried a cheaper vapor line (LHS didnt have the XIX)- they fit okay - they were light but didnt seem that durable or strong around the ankle support. I just assume by the reviews, baking them and that the XIX price that the skates would fit better and would be more stable.

my lhs doesnt have the RBK's but the reviews state that they are comfy and good skates.

epstud, not that I want to beat this to death, but I do not believe you are getting my point. I understand that Vapors don't fit you, but that doesn't automatically make them a bad choice for someone else.

The right choice is the skate that fits best.

Like I said before, it has nothing to do with feet, but the fact that I dont think they're very well made or durable. They are extremely light though, and the Vapors do have that going for them.

Well Im guessing the stock Rbk 5k will fit more diff types of feet than a stock Vapor brand skate? He will have to try them both on perhaps, but IMO the Rbk 5k is a lot more skate than its Vapor XIX counterpart. Maybe he can tell us what he wears for roller, and we'd get a better idea.

the vapor XIX is more skate than a 5K any day of the week. The comparabvle skate in the rbk lin to a XIX in terms of features would be the 7k. you're paying for the pump in the 5k, everything else is of lesser quality than the XIX. Don't knock a skate just because it didn't work for you. The fit of all vapor skates (since they went to roman numerals) are similar, so if the XXs didnt work for you, and the XXXs didnt work for you, the XXXXs will not work for you.

As far the the RBK fitting more feet, it's the other way around- more feet will fit into the RBK due to its increased width and depth. That doesn't mean the skate fits the foot. The skate will be too deep and wide for many feet.

you also suggested a pair of 705s which are well out of his stated price range.

And to the original poster, if you feel your current skates fit your feet well, and the manufacturer also offers ice skates, I'd go for that. Otherwise, just go into a LHS and try some on.

I change roller hockey skates once a year-

I currently have tour code 2's they are okay on comfort and fit. I also have a pair of ccm vector pf10's - I think these fit pretty good light and comfy (I dont wear them because of thei chassis)

will ccm roller sizes be he same as ccm ice? and what model would be similar?

Thanks for your help guys

well, I'm completely ignorant to inline, and inline skates- but I know the PF10 is a higher end model, so I'm guessing it's a stiffer boot? I know the Vector line of ice skates is pretty damn nice, but I have no experience with them. If you like the fit/comfort of the Vector- it'd be a lot easier to start with a close comparison to your inlines... And I believe CCM/RBK inlines and ice skates run the same size.

Why not just slap some new holders on your PF10s?

Although I agree with what you are saying as far as fitting goes, Vapors don't exactly have a good rep for durability.

Go try on skates, it doesn't sound like you know what type of foot you have. You could be unhappy with a internet purchase unless you know exactly what fits your foot best. I have the RBK 5k. I have a high volume foot with a high arch, narrow to average heel and slightly wider than average forefoot. Sure the RBK 5K "fits" me, but I'm finding it doesn't support me as a hockey skate should. I have skated with them 2x a week for several months and they have held up fine.

Let your feet tell you what brand to get, nothing else.

The bad rep stems from the considerable durability issues with the earlier production runs of Vapor XX. There have not been durabilty issues with the XXX nor have I heard of issues with the XIX.

I just got the 5k pump skates and I love them. But they are quite different from the bauer vapors, and their durability has yet to be seen. I've skated probably 5 games and a few practices in them, and they seem to be holding up just fine so far.

But it depends on what fits better. The 5k's felt amazing out of the box, so i was sold. I also like more forward lean that they provide over the bauers.

Try them both, and go with what feels right.
