Custom 703's

Recommended Posts

Dunno if this is allowed or counts as advertising but I was thinking about investing in a pair of cusom 703's w/ techlite, carbon outsole, custom sizing, and lightspeeds and CycloneTaylor quoted them at 645 USD.

More specifically I think it was 120 for the techlite and comp/carbon outsole

And 85 for lightspeeds and installation (even w/ credit for the stock cobras)

I really dug the techlite 703's that were posted on CB. Though I figure customizing 735's would be a way around the techlite charge.

:o $645? What a waste of money. Sometimes i think $400 for skates is crazy.

Yeah, 400 breaks my bank as well.........

In light of the prices of the s500 and 8090, do you guys think skate pricing is headed towards a downward trend?

Why not just go with the G3's? Then you'll just have to deal with the Cobra holders.

Good point but they haven't been out long enough. Normally I wouldn't mind giving them try except for what I've read here about their possible quality control problems. And they're ugly as heck.

Veltri: I was looking into quarter lengths and widening the forefoot. I have a super narrow heel but wider forefeet. But given the prices I think it'd be smarter to try on as many models as I can til I find the glass slipper so to speak. Though I feel like I'm wasting the salesman's time when I ask to try on too many pairs.

are you retarted ? If you need a good skate, you need a good skate, screw the price tag across the skate.

yes im retarded. So retarded, that it affects my playing ability. We may not all have as much money as you Slapper. And i can almost guarentee you parents wont pay that much for you skates. And no, that isnt canadian currencey either. But come on, $645 for skates? Those skates are no better than any top of the line skate, and cost $125 more.

I'm getting tired of the insults guys. Higher cost doesn't equal better products either. Everyone has their own preferences.

unfortunately, i think that hockey skates are going to bie hight priced unless they (one company) drops there high end skate and obligate the rest to follow like XBOX and SONY PS2 did... unlikely to happen

It wont be a matter of one company just dropping their price. R&D is extremely expensive, especially with newer technologies, and the price of materials must come down as well.

I'd suggest giving the 709's/609's a try. I have a regular width forefoot and narrow heel and the 609's fit me pretty well. I tried on almost every Graf model there was in a couple sizes each before I found the best fit. It took 2 hours to do so and to make a decision. It's better for both you and the store that you walk out satisfied with your new skates so definitely take your time. If not all at once then go back another time.

Are you sure 709/609's fit narrow to medium width feet ? According to Graf, it's for wider feet people.

It really depends on the overall shape of the foot. I know what the Graf description says, but it can't hurt to try them on anyway. Worse that could happen is knowing for sure they don't fit, or maybe finding out they fit better.

There is also a narrow model available.

That's their job, helping you find the perfect skate.

The guys at my LHS know the equipment lines really well and if need be will have you try on every make and model that they sell to find the "perfect match" for your foot type. Having said that, it's extremely important to keep an open mind when buying new skates. Some of us, me included, often go in with our minds already made up between a few different skate models when in reality what we want isn't what necessarily fits our foot.

I think Mission and Bauer did exactly that this year w/ their flagship skates (well, the 8090 may share marketing room w/ the XX's) But up until this year, top end skates ran at least 400 US. Now these, two are going for 350-360 US respectively. Still tough on us working stiffs, but it's a start.

Whether or not the other co's will follow is another thing.

The problem with knowing which Graf skate to go with is most stores only carry the 703/G3 and 705/G5 (at least in Dallas and I would guess most other parts of the country) as the other models aren't high volume sellers. That's the problem with Graf having so many models---most stores won't carry but a couple models of them.

It is my understanding that Graf used to be selective about which shops sold their skates because they wanted the store to know and carry all their models. I don't know how true this is anymore (if it was at all) since I see only certain Graf models at Play It Again Sports (502's, 703's). It stands to reason that they don't carry all the models because they aren't exactly a hockey specific store. The local store I bought my Grafs from thankfully had the full line-up and many sizes to choose from in each model.
