Ever looked *inside* your skates?

I remember hearing a story about Scott Melanby in 1996, during the Finals against the Avs, saw a huge rat crawling around the nasty locker room in the old Florida Panthers rink. Turns out he had a lethal one timer.

The infamous "Rat Trick."

One time a guy on my team stepped back when he opened his bag. I though c'mon it;s just a spider or something. He says "Um there is a possum in my helmet". Like a bunch of little girls we all run up and scream at it the poor sucker. He took it outside and it ran away. His helmet stunk and was chewed up. the way he tossed it in the trash was classic. Turns out he left his bag open in the garage.

Doesnt anyone use a rack or something? I leave my gear out in the garage, but it comes out of the bag after EVERY game/session of hockey. dries up the next day or so, but I shake the gear down before putting it back in the bag...

I don't know how people can just leave their stuff in their bag, or in the garage and whatnot.

I wear a lot of Under Armour under my stuff, shirt with long sleeves, shorts, long socks, skull-cap. I find it helps to stop my gear from really reeking. It gets washed immediately after every game (along with anything I can fit in the washer) and my gear is hung up in the basement to dry, usually with a fan on it.

Insoles come out of the skates and they're hung upside-down.

After this season, I'm probably going to start getting my gear cleaned after every season.

I always hate packing and unpacking my gear, too, but jesus, if there was anything dead in my gear, it would go in the garbage.

I built myself some shelfs just to be able to put my gear on to dry and it works well. Keeps the basment tidy and the gear smelling fresh, well maybe not fresh but keeps it from reeking that's for sure. I left my gear in my bag in my trunk once overnight and regretted it so much that now I always take it out of the bag no matter how late or how tired I am after.

Which reminds me of something that happened to me when I was younger. My Godmother had bought me a water lizard for my b-day. I must have been 7 years old or so. Anyway, the lid wasn't closed properly on the water tank and the lizard escaped. We looked all around for it and couldn't find him.

I went out to play with my friends. We used to take clothes line wood pins or whatever they are called and naile one on a piece of wood and take many appart and put elastics on them and use them as a rifle. We'd put a nail at the end of our peice of wood, pull on the elastick, secure the little metal spring in the clothes line clip and release it to shoot our friends. When done right it stunged quite good. Anyway, I was keeping some of my ammo clipped on my rubber boots and some fell in my boot and it was uncomfortable so I take my boot of, turn it upside down to remove my ammo from my boot and down comes a dead lizard lol. He wasn't rotten or dried or anything. Seemed like he had been in the boot for not too long and probably died because of my foot hitting/stepping on him with every step I took. Ran home crying and threw it in the sink to try and revive him to no avail. My mom threw it in the toilet and that was the end of it. She hated that little thing too so she was pretty happy with the turn of event lol

I bought one of those $20 wire racks from Home Depot and put it in my bathroom. It takes about 10 minutes to put together and it's been pretty solid. It's got three shelves, maybe 2'x4' or something and stands about 3' high. Get home, put the gloves/elbows on the top, shins on the second shelf, pants on the bottom, and hang the shoulders off a hook. Pull the tongues forward on the skates and set them next to it. Flip on the fan and let it dry overnight, then spray with Febreze Sport and let it sit all day.

I used to put my gear on a clothing rack all my life but have gotten sloppy recently. After a rivet popped out of my boots on a shot (cause they were rusted out) I've gone back to taking my insoles out everytime, and am looking to get something to put my gear on. I open my bag and pull my pants out but I really should hang it up. Maybe I'll go get something today after reading this thread.

Its great in the summer when you can just put it in the sun and get rid of the smell.

Got the story half-right...

It was Opening Night, 1995-96 season. A rat ended up in the room and Mels took his stick and shot it against the wall, killing it. They soon went on the ice and he scored two goals that night, hence the "Rat Trick." I was at that game.

The story got out and everything and fans started throwing rats every time a Panther scored.

There was a tombstone put in the locker room where the rat ended up.

after reading this thread I'm not sure if I want to keep my gear in my garage anymore. I have one of those heavy duty plastic 5 shelf rack that I got for home depot and I dry my gear after every time I play, but I usually leave it out until the next time I play. Maybe from now on I will put the gear back into the bag after its dry and close it all the way in hopes that something doesn't crawl in there.

And white tails since those buggers tend to hang around inside more. I think a team mate once had a huntsmen in his bag...

I feel this thread tops eric42434224 old injury thread from early last year
