Blacking out sticks

Recommended Posts

I know this is probably a noobish question ,but what do the pros use when they black out the bottoms of their sticks? You know the stuff that looks like some kind of paint thats black.

Black spray paint

Or if they're looking for grip they'll rub black tape all over the shaft.

Does disguising the puck really factor in to the game? Honest question, hasn't for me.

Honestly I think its more about vision then disquising the puck. Some players black out sticks and then use white tape. I black out my sticks because I can't stand looking down at some wild color.

I'm going to get really kinky and blot something on my Dolos tonight to see if it gives it a grip feel in the paint. Too bad I ran out of my Bauer Super-Awesome Secret Hockey paint.

Keep your head up and you won't have that problem.

Innos and their other brand still open up, but yes, Drew hit it on the head and I'm a whore when I find a pattern I love on any stick. That and these are the only tapered shafts that I've found in gorilla flex.

PS The blotting worked like a lead zeppelin.

Honestly, the color distracts you? Maybe a little less focus on aesthetics, little more focus on the game...

That Puck Hog intrigued me so I searched for reviews of it. Here is one I found:

"Last season at Las vegas hockey show I got some samples of the liquid tape called Puck Hog. I did test it and it does work, but overall I still did like traditional tape better. Here's why:

-It's messy, especially with us having 2 kids in the family taping their goalie sticks all the time

-It needed drying by heatgun or hair dryer and I just don't have time for that always.

-Bottom of the blade wears off quickly and you needed to apply more "tape" after almost every time you used it."

grip shafts... to grippy, regular shafts.. not grippy enough...

an application of candle wax on the shaft, provides a little more grip.. but it wears out so you have to reapply every once in a while...

Here's a stupid question - maybe someone has tried it (I'm not going to - I'm a tape guy), but has anyone tried aerosol rubber undercoating? They sell it in auto shops to coat the wheel wells or inside of a bumper to prevent rust. It's literally rubber in a can and is black and sprays on thin. Has anyone tried spraying this stuff onto one of their sticks in lieu of tape for extra puck grip?

I see the new Bauer One70 stick has a "re-akt" blade coating which is along the same idea (I think).

Just interested, that's all...

To be honest all I have used Puck Hog for is to black out the bottom of my V110 shaft and blade. I would never use it as a substitute for tape. However I do agree that it does take quite a long time to dry.

What's a good method to use to black out sticks? I got a stick with horrible paint chips and I'm hoping to make it look better by blacking it out. For those of you who have blacked out a stick before what method did you go with?
