Catching a pass (with your hand)

Recommended Posts

Last night I caught an outlet pass with my hand from the other team's defenseman. This morning my hand is pretty bruised and sore. This is the second time I do this in the last month.

Would you consider this a good habit or bad one?

It sounds like you made a good play. You kept the puck in the zone. It was only a bruise, sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself to make the play. Just don't try to stop any slapshots with your palm  .

try to receive the puck more(kinda like how you would on your blade) it helps soften the blow... but not by a lot. If it's pretty hard I try to use the back of my glove to deflect it towards my feet(if I can remember to  ).

...it's even worse when the rink you're playing in is REALLY fucking cold.

It's more reaction than habit. If your in a shooting or passing lane and the puck comes near you belly-high, you're just going to instinctively grab it/knock it down with your hand.

i'm used to that... but I used to play goalie, and catch the puck a certain way so that i dont have any broken fingers. One guy I used to play against, a good player, but too full of himself. He took a slapper, and I just caught it, put it down and cleared the zone. After the game, he kept asking everyone 'who caught it, who caught it', with a arrogant look of his face... everyone just ignored him

I used to be a goalie so when I see a puck coming I decide how to react to put the puck where I want it. Instinct certainly does take a part in it, but it's learning how to control reactions in a short amount of time. It's just something that comes along a lot less as a skater so most don't get a chance to discover how to react to catching or deflecting pucks with their hands.

I ocassionally miss pucks that I could easily grab too, because my player gloves don't have a pocket :( haha

I'd consider trying to use the stick to knock it down or the back of your gloves. Might not be quite as effective but your figures will thank you.

yea id rather take a bruise on my hand then take it off the outside cuz u have no idea where that is gonna go and with a stick u could miss it or like northside said ud get a high sticking call which would defeat the purpose of doing it.

To an extent the question is does it matter? If you're playing in the NHL, or some other high level of hockey, then by all means catch the puck in your hand. Your job, or the job you're hoping for, may depend on it. In the beer leagues, what's more important, missing a scoring chance or not breaking your fingers? Personally, I'd go with not breaking my hand. It's a bit like getting in front of slap shots. In the beer leagues I'm not going to get on anyone's case for not using their body to block slap shots.

Because using your stick to deflect pucks would be wise in beer leagues? Some people like their teeth.

If the puck is below your shoulders I don't think knocking it down with the stick is risking anyone's teeth. Obviously the stick should not go above your head. Nothing in the OP suggests that the puck was high, or low for that matter. This isn't rocket science, or do some have so little common sense everything has to be explained in great detail covering every possible situation?

Funny that common sense is mentioned as using your stick to knock it down would be ruled out by such a thing.

keep in mind that some people's teeth are at some people's shoulder height. ;) So something that might not be high sticking might be high sticking. :P

Coming from someone that actually recommend catching it with the unprotected palm, well let's just say if you don't understand why that's stupid your opinions on what is and isn't common sense are pretty well meaningless. As puck deflections and wild shots are just a part of the game futher common sense would dictate that wearing a cage to play rec league hockey would be a good idea. That way if someone decides to knock a puck down as opposed to risking breaking their fingers your teeth are nice a safe behind metal bars, Though if I had to venture a guess I'd wager you're one of the jackasses that is dumb enough not to wear shoulder pads and then throws a tantrum when you get hit in the chest with the puck.

Jesus are you dense. No one's talking about palming a slapshot here; I'm talking about some fluttering puck coming near me I'm going to grab with my hands.

No, I don't wear a visor or cage but I wear shoulder pads. I don't see where you'd get off assuming I'd whine though, but then again you're one of those literal people and probably do whine their fair share. I just hope you wear your jill.
