Janssen on Kaberle

Recommended Posts

Dirty hit and late. I think a 5 hame suspension would have been better but he only got 3.

Good job for Tucker being an idiot and say hows he is going to punish the rest of the team in advance...they missed their chance for full revenge.

retribution is important

Therefore if Brashear had taken out Jagr at the knees as retribution for Colton Orr's crosscheck on OV, you are ok with that? Frontier justice, right?

The Orr crosscheck to Ovy was in retribtion to Jagr getting elbowed in the ead by Brashear.

Eddie Shore, Old time hockey.

Alias- Almost as stupid as your signiture, eh? What does going after a bum like Jansson serve? A bum can take out the other teams best player. What should TO do to pay them back? Take out a bum or take out a star player?

Messier put Modano on a Stretcher in this situation. It is not pretty, but sometimes it is warrented. I am not a fan of cheap shots, and hopefully TO does something clean to serve payback

Ok no need to get personal and attack my signiture. Obviousley I can see your point of "Take out a bum or take out a star player?" but playing hockey to injure people in retaliation IMO isn't right, either play physical hockey and finish all your checks or fight the guy fair and square.

I've stood by and been pretty silent on the late/high hits this year, but when it happens to your own guy you feel obligated to speak out. I'm all for hitting in the game, but this is garbage. He didn't have the puck for 3+ seconds. Clean shoulder to Kaberle's head which was bent over. The league needs to step up on this. I've always thought Janssen is a waste of an NHLer anyway. I can't wait to see someone try to defend him and this hit.

I'm sure this has been said but I need to say it right away cause well I feel it wasnt dirty other then leaving the feet. It wasnt 3+ seconds. It was 1.33seconds after the puck left his stick. It's been shown in t.v.

How many strides did Janssen take from the point when Kaberle released the puck? How much distance did he travel? 1.33 or however many seconds it actually was is pretty long given how fast he was traveling. The point is that nobody on the ice saw it, including Raycroft who was 10 feet away because the play had moved so far away.

Man he took no strides he was gliding and kabrale got jacked up. Shouldn't have been watching his pass. Of course the puck moved up the ice, its the NHL they move the puck so quick. Fact is he hit him 1.33 seconds, and no strides(but was easily with in two) so he didnt do anything wrong, but jump. And anyone who has ever tried to hit a defenceman backing up you know that the momentum they have goin backwards already its extremely hard to hit them. I would venture to say he jumped a bit to make sure he actually got a peice of him, and he probably uprised himself with how hard he was able to hit him. Long story short, if kabrale gets up and plays the next shift we're never having this conversation. The hit was within what rules the NHL has in place at this time, that CANNOT be argued.

If Steve Moore gets up and walks away, nobody talks about it. If Drury skates away, nobody talks about it. The fact of the matter is that the NHL should be punishing the act, not the result. In this circumstance there was a bad injury. Had Kaberle not gotten hurt (which I just don't see happening with that type of play, it was a blatant intent to injure), Janssen should still have been punished. Why is high sticking someone in the face a penalty if they don't get cut? Obviously they aren't "hurt" by the act, but it is still deemed dangerous by the league. Hits to the head are exactly the same.

How much you wanna bet the next Toronto-New Jersey game is 100% incident free?

That's more realistic than a slugfest.

IMO, everyone is over reacting. Janssen went with a normal stance in hitting someone and Kaberle had his head down. The hit was 2, if not, less than 2 seconds after the pass was made.

It was 1.5 seconds, but most NHL players can go from blue line to blue line in that amount of time. Look at how much ice Janssen covered after Kaberle passed the puck.

But still, the rule states 3 seconds.

The hit was within the rules. As dirty as you may think it was, it was within the rules. Period. He broke no rule but left his feet, which does not deserve suspension. 3 games is ridiculous, if anything its a charge for leaving his feet thats it. Its just another example of a star player drawing a suspension cause he makes a bantam mistake by watching his pass.

Just for fun, please look at the play again. If the play was sooooo far up the ice why was Kaberle still looking at his pass? Because it was 1.33 seconds later so he was about to look up. Just something I thought was worth mentioning.

Ok so let me get this straight you have a direct line to the NHL refs office?

Because if you were right there wouldnt be a suspension? Right? If you think 3 games is silly then keep your head up at your next game.

Why are you going to come hit me? I'm confused as to what you're trying to say? I also don't understand you attacking me about a direct line to the refrees office? If you're going to chirp me at least put some thought into it. The point is it was within the rules. I don't know how you can argue that. As much as you may think they should change the rules to avoid this, they haven't so its a stupid suspension in my opinion.

Oh there is plenty of thought into that comment.

Now I would never in my life hit anyone that late after releasing the puck.

You on the other hand dont see anything wrong with it, so if you do it to someone then expect it back ten fold and if you do dont think the other guy is going to hold up if you play like that idiot.

As for the ref's room well how in the world do you see that being with in the rules can you please show me what rule allows a player to hit another with out the puck. Even if you want to make it a minimal penalty it would have been interference. There is no way that was a check being finished he knew exactly what he was doing.

If you want exactly what the call was from Toronto and was it a missed call or just an error on the refs part I will find it out tomorrow.

The rule is that you can finish your check within 2 seconds or 2 strides. He Obeyed both those rules. So in my mind its legal. Would I ever try to hurt someone? Absolutely not. I am a complete softy off the ice. However, would I take the oppurtunity to hit a guy with his head down, ESPECIALLY a top guy that you would love to have rushing passes because of not wanting to get hit all night. Yes. Yes I would hit him. Would I make that hit right there, it would depend the type of game it was. I'm not arguing that he didnt go out of his way to hit him, the point is if he wants to its within the rules to do so.

As for you implying the fact that i am a dirty hockey player, anyone who has played a decently high level of hockey that understands the passion and the feeling of doing everything to win will tell you that they have probably made some mistakes in their careers. I, being a guy who loves to chirp on the ice, have often felt bad for some things I have said that weren't even that bad. That being said I'll do what it takes for my team(obviously within reason im not going to bertuzzi someone) so if thats making a big hit thats ALMOST late. Yep ill hit him. And ill take the heat. I don't know if you've ever played hockey and if you had if you remember the feeling knowing you were probably not going to play competetive hockey again. But yesterday was probably my last game of competetive hockey, as I'm going to school next year. The feeling I got was the worst I have ever had. I can say that honestly, I have NEVER been that upset in my life. If you have felt that type of passion for the game, you would understand that Janssen did something within the rules to help his team, and did not mean to hurt anyone. He doesn't deserve the suspension in my opinion.

It was 1.33 seconds after the pass was recieved not from when it left his stick. Thats the rule. After recieveing pass. Time yourself in distance at 1.33 seconds next time on ice thats a pretty far distance.

He left his feet an inch. Give him a charge. It wasn't an elbow kaberle was bent over, thus the connection to the head. The announcers are die hard leafs fans, of course it was an elbow and if they had it there way they'd tell you janssen also threatend to take his skate off and stab someone. Come on. You want to know why theirs more headshots lately? People start wanting to talk about them, so they get on the highlights. If you think that there were any less headchecks back then your nuts. We're just getting softer. A good thing? maybe. Protect the players. But if its a clear attempt to injure. The guys job is to hit people. He's not trying to hurt him.

If you check some of my posts you will see that not only do I play but am heavly involved in both Mens and Womens hockey at the highest levels and have seen my share of these cheap shots.

But lets get real here he went after his head if you want to give Jannsen the .27 seconds then the 3 games for the elbow to the head is well warranted.

It would be .67 seconds. And that's not the rule. If you want to call Hull on having his foot in the crease for the stanley cup. Maybe buffalo wins the cup. You can't go on that. The rule is the rule. Love it or hate it. He didn't intentionally get his head in my opinion.

Sorry Sweets, every check in the NHL is with the intention of hurting the other player. If you weren't throwing hits in your last competitive game of hockey with the intention of hurting the other player, what was your intent for hitting to begin with? Separate the puck from the player? Thats a safe answer but the reason for throwing a check is to punish the other guy. Now, think NHL and magnify the intent, the velocity, the determination, the strength, and the hurt by a thousand. Those checks have bad intentions, each and every one of them.

Don't even start with me man. You know the rule. You are an educated guy about hockey, I know you know the rule. You don't need to be a smartass it advances this discussion in no way.

Ok, fair enough. Let me rephrase it. He wasn't doing anything that kaberle wouldn't have done to him.

As sweetblazer said the comentators are die hard leaf fans. Aside from that, EVERYONE on the leafs side is going to watch that replay in slow motion. Even in slow motion it's borderline. Maybe 2.5 seconds anfter the pass was made.

Oh there is plenty of thought into that comment.

So you're saying that behind the net when someone gets rid of the puck quick, you've never hit them. That's a little bit after the person got rid of the puck too.

I'm no going to go out of my way to find the rule. I could care less I'm having a discussion of opinions and what you think is right. I have always heard and been taught you have 2 seconds or two strides to finish your check. Even if what you say is true which it may well be, then that makes 1/4 of the checks in the NHL penalties. I will also stand by the fact I think its still a legal hit.
