Do we have to wait until Monday to hear what kind of suspension he recieved?

He's not going to get anything, don't hold your breath. If he was going to get suspended, they would announce something before the next Devils game.

Face-to-face hearing 10 games+

Perhaps I was wrong.

The NHL is expected to conduct a hearing Saturday afternoon, following up on Devils' tough guy Cam Janssen's hit on Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle. Based on how late the hit occured, it is believed Janssen will be suspended.

After everything I've always heard from Leafs fans about how gritty and tough their teams always are, and how much heart they have, I'm a little surprised that Janssen just skated away and stood around on the ice for a while after that with nobody going anywhere near him. I don't know who else was on the ice, but on such a 'gritty, tough' team, you would think someone would at least try and do something about that. I'd be less embarassed to be the guy that fought Janssen and lost than to be the guy who didn't even try to do anything.

There's 3 problems with this.

1. Nobody on the ice saw it. Tucker did in the stands, but that was because he was in the stands. They had to wait to see the replay (apperantly shown after the game) to even find out what happened to him.

2. Their "grit" is largely on the shelf. Tucker, Ondrus, Newburry, Peca, Belak are all out of the line-up.

3. They can't afford a fight, they needed the win. It's not like Buff/Ott where both teams are clearly in the playoffs. Losing a player with an instigator screws them hard when they were already having a tough go with the refs. Ontop, Janssen did not see the ice again.

A thing is sure, Tucker won't forget it. Janssen should be aware of Tucker next game they will play each other.

I hate to see those hits, the league should protect their ''skilled'' player...

They've fought before. Tucker beat Janssen's head in with a helmet then got his own head beat in pretty good.

Here's the Belak - Janssen fight

Pretty boring, but they both were tied up well until Janssen pulled a Rob Ray

In fairness both hits have been clocked and the Janssen hit was 3 times as late as the Neil hit, but that said I likely wouldn't suspend him. I think everyone here knows how big of a Kaberle and Leafs fan I am, but this was simply a cheap/boarderline hit. Within the "written and unwritten" rules of the NHL, but I am more infavour of having head shots called now.

How sad is it that yesterday was Kab's B-day :(

There is no respect among players anymore. Off the ice, yes, but once they pull on the jersey, none of them give a shit about what they do to another human being. Sorry to say, JMHO. Late high hit, no doubt.

I'm a real fan of hitting and wish there was more of the old school open ice hitting that use to exist in the NHL. I also love to hate the leafs. Also, I was one of the people who thought that although Neil's hit was a bit vicious, it was within the rules and I was ok with it.

However, this hit was absolutely dirty. It was way late and a complete blindside w/ absolutely no intent other then to drive his shoulder through Kaberle's skull. Now again I will put out there that under the NHL's rules, the actual hit itself was probably legal. Although it was so far to the side and almost from behind that I'm questioning that. But the timing was so far after the play that you have to believe he'll be suspended for this.

I love hitting that fits into the flow of the game and I've been on the other side of this debate on the Campbell and McLaren hits because I thought they were hockey plays that turned out badly. When a player attempts to initiate contact directly to the head (and not the body) of another player, you know that his intent is to injure the other player. I am not saying that hard hits or big hits should be eliminated, only the ones that are delivered with the intent to injure another player. That rule is already on the books and simply isn't being enforced properly with regards to the lack of concern for the well-being of other players like DarkStar mentioned.

boarderline? If there was ever a perfect example of one of the things that the NHL needs to fix, it was that hit right there. I think that was one of the worst hits I've seen all year.

For a league that wants to "market its star players", you would think they would do something to keep the shitty players from taking huge runs at the more skilled players.

I wish the rules were written differently, but they aren't. I don't like the hit, I wouldn't make the hit, and god knows I wish it didn't happen, but theres some things which the NHL just misses and I think this is one of the things they've forgotten about in the rule book.

Suspension just came down 3 games for Janssen, or as most Leaf Fans are saying 1/2 a game for Kaberle (in terms of ice-time).

I think I'm probably the only one here who doesn't want to see the shit hit the fan that night. Janssen, if eligible, is going to have to be in the line-up to make sure that someone like Gomez or Parise or Rafalski doesn't receive the repercussions of his actions; but Claude has to keep his ice-time to an absolute minimum - I'd hate to see a skill guy get hurt that late in the regular season.

That said, I can tell you that Tucker wouldn't stand a chance against Janssen. If anyone is going to do anything, it's going to have to be Belak.

Considering the fact that the other guy had already caught the pass, it wasn't legal in any way, shape or form. Boderline for a suspension (given recent history), I'll grant you that.

I don't know if you saw the link Eazy posted, but it showed Tucker and Janssen fighting. It was a good scrap, especially considering the size difference. Belak and him squared off earlier in the year and it took Belak a minute to even throw a punch. That being said, it'll be a premeditated Belak/Janssen bout. I don't condone going after the other team's stars during another game. It'd be one thing to run someone that same game, its another to wait three weeks and go after them. I'm actually glad the way Maurice handled it. He didn't pull a Ruff on the bench and look like an ass. He showed a lot of class and demeanor.

This is exactly why I (and I assume every other Leafs fan, and fan of the game in general) is so mad about Janssen's run.

Well he did open him up last time they fought. Darcy's a creative individual, maybe this time he'll use a skate :)

Julien didn't play Janssen AT ALL after the hit, so having him out of the line-up wouldn't surprise me next game. Also Maurice specifically said not to do anything because they don't have the luxury that Buff/Ott had.

Your right, I was under the impression that the 3 second rule existed, but apperantly it does not. Thus it is illegal, in addition to being cheap and dirty.

Just like the way officials gradually turned a blind eye towards hooking, holding and interference, officials and the league have gradually allowed more vicious hits. It's time they get that under control before Crosby gets injured or someone is killed.

Cola, Green, O'Neill and Kilger. It was during a line change, Devereaux had just come off. Whats your point?

Green, Coliacovo, Steen (middle of a change with O'neal I think), Kilger I think. Its kind hard to tell from the video. The only one that went near him was Green, but he didn't really ido much and the ref was between them.

Thanks, I just wanted to know, ok? I don't need a point to ask a question. I wondered if McCabe was on the ice at the same time, ok?

There is nothing here to argue if you read my first post about players lack of respect for one another. McCabe is usually paired with Kaberle. I just wanted to know if McCabe was on the ice because I would have been surprised if McCabe didn't stand up for his partner.

Guess what, kosy, I agree with you. Three game is nothing. I would like to have seen 5 games minimum, to start with. You see, I'm not such a prick, after all.
