Broken Tendon Guard on One90's.

Recommended Posts

A couple months ago, my One90's got cut where the tendon guard is on the inside of the boot. It took away from some of the guards structural integrity in the sense, that it would bend back farther than normal. Today after practice I noticed that the plastic in the tendon guard has cracked, and now the guard hangs loose.

What should I do about this?

Do I really need the tendon guard? I skated all practice without noticing anything.

This is my second pair of One90's, the heel section of the sole in my first pair disengrated, so Bauer replaced them for me. Would the fact that these are my second pair have any impact on Bauer's willingness to repair them?

Think about the name "tendon guard" (and what could happen to to your tendon if it weren't there).I think you definately need it and the company should do something IMO.

I broke mine yesterday. Didn't even get a shift, got on the ice after the game and it 'popped.' It hung limp and I could bend it all the way to the back of the boot. The skates were only 3 weeks old. So, I brought it to the lhs and I had a new pair like 2 hours after I did it. They said it is under warranty, so they replaced them. I love my LHS! :D

I'm keeping track of these defects in the newer Nike/Bauer models and so far that's two problems that they've had with the one 90's. The first was the sole separating from the boot by the heel and now the tendon guard breakage issue. I was looking at some one 70's at my LHS the other day and commenting to the sales guy I was chatting with, about how flimsy the tendon guards seemed to be on the two higher end models, and lo and behold what do I see on this thread today, my worst fears realized. If you recall CCM had an issue like this with their 952 skates in 2003. Keep your ears and eyes open guys. Just remember the durability issues with the Bauer Vapor line and watch where you spending your hard earned cash!

I totally agree with you J.R. and I'm not trying to sway anyone away from Bauer/Nike. I'm only trying to inform people of what I've heard about defects or problems with any particular product. Easton Synergy skates have also had problems with their skate blade cracking when struck by a puck as well as issues with cracked blade holders. Each manufacturer has certain bugs with their product as you have already pointed out.

Hmmm duch, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. Judging by your comments and hyperbole in this and the one70 thread I would say you are into exaggeration and fearmongering.

Absolutely not. I'm only trying to inform people on potential problems with different manufacturers products and I'm trying to be totally honest. I own several Bauer/Nike products and have found the quality is extremely good. I also own and have owned several other manufacturers products I've found where less than adequate when it came to performance and quality. As JR said it all relative.

Like everything else in mass production, There will always be some that have problems, If a good majority of the skates had the problem that's a different story. I work in the automotive industry and I see it all the time, even from the best manufacturers. It happens, It's more of how the companies handle issues. In my past experiences, NBH has treated me very well.

I agree totally with what duch said. NBH products are just not known for being durable. I know JR is trying to protect NBH and not turn this thread into an anti-nbh thread (nothing wrong with that) but I believe duch had the right to voice out his concerns. When you see tendon guards rip off the boots, there is definitely a problem there.

I am not trying to protect anyone. It happens to every company - Mission had the same problem with tendon guards on the S500 and we've talked about it on here. They take care of their customers and so will NBH. But judging by your past posts, you've taken potshots at NBH every chance you get.

This is interesting to find out seeing that this was my main concern when considering the purchase of these skates last year, now it looks like there is some data to back it up. It's also interesting to note that (1) you don't see many NHLer's wearing these skates "off the shelf", I see more talk on this board about the old Bauer's with One90 badging and (2) these One90's are showing up on Ebay all the time for a few hundred less than the $600 price tag.

You don't see everyone in the NHL wearing these skates because many guys in the show aren't gearwhores, and couldnt care less about the newest glove/skate/ops/etc. They are especailly particular when it comes to skates, and that is why bauer continues to make the old style supremes that you mentioned.

There are a lot of ONE90s on ebay because a lot of people who DON'T have the skill think that $600 skates will give them the skill. The skates take a good deal of work to break in and don't fit everyone's foot. If they were all breaking, they wouldn't be sold on ebay for cheap, they'd be sent back to NBH for a warranty replacement.

There are more guys wearing off the shelf ONE90s than the special makeups in the NHL. I can think of 6 guys in the NHL wearing that particular skate, and last we heard, there's over 60% of the NHL in Bauer skates. Now, 33% of the NHL is wearing Vapors - that leaves about 29% wearing other Bauer models. Other than those few wearing the special make-up boot, and a shade still in Vapor 10s and 8090s, that leaves a very considerable chunk of guys in ONE90. And still more than any other manufacturer.

Every time there's some sort of ONE90 problem, you, duch and mew come out of the woodwork and blast the skate. Give it up, it looks petty.

There is no "big difference." Let me ask you this - has anyone on MSH ever been denied a warranty claim for their ONE90s? No.

The representatives who participate on MSH have taken care of EVERY person's problems with their skates and beyond.

Everyone has been courteous, on both ends.

In terms of skates on the market, i don't trust any other skate besides NBH products. I'd say almost every member here grew up on Bauer or CCM, and in my day I wore both. I have never had anything but great quality with NBH. Duch and mew, i cant imagine how you could hate NBH. Either you want to create controversy on this board, or your too much of a bender to appreciate their skates.

look at the stats as JR said, obviously theres a reason NBH is #1 in the NHL and #1 retail

Alright JR, I quit.

Maybe one day I will change my mind about NBH when I try the one90s and experience 0 durability problems like my vectors.

BTW JR, can you tell me why NBH is no.1 in retail and NHL? (I ask this in a good way). I mean on eBay I see people paying $200+ on XXs today but are reluctant to get the S500s for around $100. Surely you can't disagree on the fact that S500s are better skates than vapor XXs?

I guy on my teams tenon guard snapped totally off and it was just sitting in his bag when he went to get dressed.

never went through a warranty claim or anything, went to the lhs and they stitched it back on with a heavy duty sort of thread, one youd see on boots of prostock skates that players just wanted to make stiffer/more protective
