NikeBauer 8500 cage

Recommended Posts

Been checking out this cage and may give it a try. Originally I was going to purchase a CCM FM480 chrome, but that never arrived, so upon further review, I'm thinking about switching to this model (I currently rock a black CCM FM480).

The literature on the NBH cage state it's lighter, allows more visibility, and of course sports the TrueVision color that drives the women crazy. I like Nike Dunks so let's see how their hockey cages roll...

8500 owners and haters alike, speak on this.

LOVE the 8500. Barely notice the thing and it's not distracting at all. Doesn't affect my vision, fairly lightweight. Much better than a black cage I tried which was very distracting.

Took a slapshot directly on the cage on Friday and the only thing that happened was the chin strap brushing up against my chin. Cage saved me about $500 - $5,000 in medical bills this week so far.

Great cage for $40.

I've had mine for about a year or so on my itech HC100 (similar to the intake). Immediately I noticed the weight savings over my old Bauer 4000 cage. Not that the 4000 was too heavy or hindering me in any way, It just felt like there was nothing there, and was a noticable difference for me. Vision is excellent, and I decided the first night that I used it that I was no longer going to use my 1/2 shield.

IMO the best part of the cage is the chincup. it's a floating style cup and it's lined with Nike Dri-Fit. It never gets in the way, doesnt shift or move at all, and since it's not connected to the straps, you can make the straps as loose or as tight as you want without sacrificing comfort of the cup.

if it's the same as an old bauer 8000 FM, then yeah it's good. pretty light in comparison to other cages, and the i've never had problems with the visibility, but of course, it doesn't compare to a visor imo.

There are slight differences in the shape of the 8500 vs the 8000. You have to hold the two cages next to each other to see the differences. Its nothing that shouldn't stop you from buying it.

I have had players using the CCM chrome FM480 get their chins cut up pretty badly by the wire on the cage at the bottom. The bars are often not a smooth, seamless finish at the chin. After hearing from a few dads how the mask cut up their kids, I always point this out when someone wants the chrome FM480. An ounce of prevention is worth not getting yelled at later or something like that........

Just make sure you get the right size, got a Large when I was wearing a 5000, too big and had to flip the clips to make it a little better, got a 8000 helmet this past week and put the cage on to see how it fits and i had to put the clips down to make it fit better.

The frame of the cage, the outside bars, are hollow so it's 12% lighter than the 8000

I have 8500 on my ccm HT500 for a couple months now and really like it. I used to wear a half shield, then switched back to a black bauer1000 cage which I didn't like the bars too much. the 8500 is great, its light, just like everyone else says the chin cup is excellent. you won't be disappointed.

the 8500 cage is awesome! I've had this cage about a year now, I sweat a lot so my drips of sweat sometime touches the cage and its starting to get rusty. I never realized my cage is always there when I play, its extreamly light and its just awesome! The best thing about this cage to me is that its more rounded the cage and the nike dri fit is good to keep the sweat out of the way.

I never really thought my black cage made a difference as far as my vision, however I noticed at times when the puck was rocketed around the boards and I'm on the point trying to keep it in, or on cross-ice pass receivings, the puck can at times be obscured. The half a second or so can make the difference in making the play or blowing it. It'll be interesting to see if the new cage will make a difference.

Thanks again for the input, all, now it's time to go order some skates without trying them on:) j/k
