Vapor

A Gripe with the mods.

Recommended Posts

It is just the face that threads are locking threads which should not be.

huh?

Anyways.. easy boy.. No need to break your ipowerapplepodbook over a thread.

The only thing I mentioned about the mods was in the last line..

I think MSH does a great job of keeping this site professional and clean.

If you would reread MY post, you would see that I was commenting on the quality of posts on the two forums and how at least this one is moderated...

How do you figure its a public forum? It is paid for, managed and moderated by a select group of individuals who donate their time and efforts for nothing.

All public web sites have people that run and maintain them. This is a public site because anyone can join, there are no membership requirments.

People can be denied membership here based on the core mods' discretion. I don't want to argue the intricacies of the forum, but people can be and are denied access to the site for various reasons. Access to the site isn't an inherited right everyone shares, hence why I view it as private.

By definition, I think it would be classified as a public forum, strictly because all posts are available to anyone. There are some forums that make certain sections available only to those people who pay for an enhanced membership.

On a different note, I tend to side with allowing duplicate topics, since we might have missed some of them the first time and they're not subject matters we would normally search on. That said, there have been some valid points raised that one of the reasons the site is "clean" is 6-8 people are reading hundreds of posts daily to make sure no one crossed a line. I could see why you wouldn't want to wade into the same topic seven times.

I don't know if one is anymore work than the other, but I'm a fan or merging similar thread instead of locking threads.

For me the laziness is what kills me. The "I didn't want to search for 30 mins" excuse is bullcrap to me because if it's taking you that long, you don't really know where you're looking. The search may not be the easiest thing to tool around with but it doesn't take much to learn how to use it. Couple it with the Google tip Chadd and JR have mentioned before, it's not hard.

Besides, 30mins of research here wouldn't be what I call useless or a waste of time. I'm pretty sure we don't have anyone here browsing for a quick answer before they go and cure cancer.

There are questions where searching is aplicable, and there are threads where it is not. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

Are the threads where searching isn't applicable even necessary on MSH? I know Chadd mentioned it earlier, but who really gives a shit what everyones favorite fast food is? Granted a few good threads have come out of Misc. over the years, but that isn't the purpose of MSH.

It is the second most patronized forum. Of course this is first and formost an equiptment board, but it is nice to have a place where you can talk about off topic discussion, but I guess you guys are right, its worthless crap, and it bacame the second most posted forum because of that.

I can see both sides. But as someone that hates reading the same questions and the same responses regardless of what forum you can take 15 to 30 SECONDS to search. You type one or two words and hit search forum... not hard. But it's also just as easy for me to not read it, BUT in the case of the mods, they have to read it.

Okay, I guess the (at least) 5 times I have said this before did not trickle down to everybody. As much as you hate reading something twice, I HATE writting it twice. I AGREE, PEOPLE SHOULD USE THE DAMN SEARCH WHEN APPLICABLE AND I ALSO HATE THE DUPLICATE POSTS, but this DOES NOT apply to everything. Not all questions can be searched for, plus there are new people with new comments, and they are being left out.

And I believe that searching in EVERY FORUM is appropriate, the exception would be posting a for sale or wtb ad. We know(ok, well I know) where you stand, I just disagree with you. Also, we've numerously invited people to bump old threads, everyone should be able to add their input into a discussion but not every time someone comes up with a random thought should a thread be started.

Imagine being a mod on here, you have to read EVERY post. You can't count on the fact that another mod might have read it because that might not have happened yet. They don't have the luxury of saying "oh, i've seen that topic before, I'm not going to read it." Now actually search and find a few multiple threads on the same subject and read them, all of them. Sound fun? Probably not.

Now if they combined threads you know you'll see users repost their thread because they'll think it got deleted. Plus it won't stop users from using the mods as a "spell check" if you will and correcting if they make a thread starting error.

For a mod, it really is a lose/lose situation. You let them be and you have 100 threads about what you had for dinner, you delete or lock them and you have threads like this complaining that threads are being deleted and that they aren't getting to speak their mind.

Vapor you've essentially said you didn't think there would be a Fast Food thread, so you wouldn't have searched for it. The idea is to search first, and then ask a question. If it's been answered, no need to re-ask the same question. If it's similar to another thread, throw it in there so the next person who searches has an easy time finding it, rather than looking through 2 threads.

No, that is not what I said, at all. What I said was if there is a question, such as "What is the Sakic Clone in Bauer", that should be searched for. But the fact is, why would somebody search for a fast food thread? They are not looking for a specific answer, they are looking for input from the members as to their opinions. Yes, there was an old thread about the topic, which had information, but how much fun is reading a 6 month old topic about fast food? Threads like this are all about feedback and talking to members, not looking for "facts"

but how many opinions are going to change over a course of a couple months? And even if half of the users in the thread change their minds at least you have other answers. If you want input that's already been "inputted" why wouldn't you want to have that information?

Most of the time it's easier and more informative to build on a platform of information and opinion that's already there then to start from scratch. Even if it is something like what's your favorite fast food resturant or who was your favorite ninja turtle.

I was always partial to Michelangelo because he kind marched to the beat of his own drummer.

lol...

you might not think to use the search tool for fast food but once you find out that there is in fact a topic that was just like it, why make a fuss about it? so you were told to used the search tool... did it really hurt that much?

I think one of the reasons this is the second most patronized thread (I assume that 'title' comes on total posts) is because so many of the (useless) threads in here turn into long drawn out shouting matches back and forth. If all the "He Said...He said" crap is filtered away, I bet there aren't as many posts as the tally would suggest.

LOL. It shouldn't be called the "Misc." section, it should be the "Bitch, Argue, Fight etc." section. ;)

All in favor...

I think there are two reasons it's the second most popular, regardless whether this is a forum about hockey equipment. First, there are only so many questions one can ask/answer about equipment, while the Misc are infinite. Possibly more importantly, however, is the Misc section(s) create more of a sense of community. There often is more personality in a post about a favorite band than one about which manufacturer makes gloves in half sizes.

Just shorten it up and call it "Drop your gloves"
