Shooting the Puck

Recommended Posts

I lost the old topic, but here it is...

How do you shoot the puck?

Is there a special technique to lifing the puck, or does it have a LOT to do with pure strength? How does the glove hand go?

Does the glove hand "grip" the stick at all? Grip=close the glove, and stick is inbetween it (bad explanation...). Or, is it open and just pushing downwards (mostly)?

Practice, practice and more practice. Start with a player stick and glove in the right hand if you aren't very proficient and move onto your goalie stick with player gloves and finally on to your goalie gloves. I can shoot both the traditional way and the overhand as used by turco, but I practice all the time.

You just gotta keep practicing...and doesn't really matter if you hold it 'correctly'..as was said above there's the Turco method and if you ever seen DiPi....that's ugly but it works.

I can only shoot the puck with the CuJo method. On the backhand, with the glove hand on the top of the stick.

It's not that accurate, but I can get some decent air under it. Scored an empty net goal doing that once. :P

I found I can kind of use the turco meathod to shoot, but it takes more effort. If I shoot normally, it helps if I grab part of the paddle to help flick the stick, but I guess it'll only take practice. I also found that my right wrist got really tired from all that shooting O.o...

I really don't think that the Turco method is good for shooting the puck. I have tried it and I find it really hard to flick my wrists, because of your hand positioning.

I however do think it is awesome for passing, because you really don't need to flick your wrists. You can get all the power behind it when using the Turco method to pass.

Although, that was when I tried it it was the first time EVER I was able to lift the puck. Although it's kind of awkward, I think the regular way is somewhat uncomfortable, or I'm doing it wrong.

what kind of glove do you have? The break in the glove can effect how you hold the stick with your catching hand.

With my Brian's air hook I can hold the shaft of the stick easily and can actually hold the stick with only my glove hand. With my Eagle I can barely hold the stick turned sideways let alone in a regular shooting position.

I can shoot with either one. Practice without gloves and just practice flicking the puck up by closing the blade of the stick without flexing the stick. Then put on your blocker and keep doing it. Then put some flex into it and fire away, once you start to feel comfortable put on your catcher. Keep working on it, it won't happen overnight but you'll learn how to play the puck.

P.S. I HATE the Turko method.

I just have to find out what I like best.

I use the Mission Helium Lite glove. I'm getting Vortek's soon, though.

In the thread before the-uh-meltdown, someone mentioned about toe hooks or something increasing the ability to lift the puck. What sticks have good toe hooks?

I don't exactly agree with that. I find a semi-big sweeping curve with some loft is easier to get the puck up. Also you need to check the lie of the stick so that it works with your shooting motion.

Both of my friends that I mentioned last time have used different gloves and can still get a lot on the puck, I personally can get better power with my Eagle and get better accuracy with my Brian's. The Eagle(cheap-o TT20) I am more uncomfortable shooting with but for some reason I can just fire the puck regardless.

Also if you can get some video of your shooting technique maybe we can offer some advise. :)

Like I said before the little Nuclear winter we had here on MSH, I said that the TPS stock Lunqvist curve has a huge toe hook!

I will try to get a pic for you! Soon, cause I have a Lundqvist curve on my stick.

Ok so it will be like 10-15 minutes because I have to upload 136 images onto the computer. I am only at around 23 as we speak

Edit: Got the image finally!

I like to use the sher-wood lalime curve to shoot, it is easy to control either passing or lifting the puck high in the air

ditto that.

i saw a goalie last night who was left handed, playing with a full right stick.

i was watching the rebounds come off his stick, talk about random directions....

a goalie in the league i reff does that, he uses it becuase he shoots right but catches left. i always thought that was the only stick he had in case he broke his old one. Def. odd rebound directions.

i can shoot the puck in one of three ways depending on the situation im in,

1) traditional - blocker hand at the top of the stick and glove hand at the top of the padle and flick my wrists. i find this- is best to use when im pushed for time and need to make a good pass to a team mate

2) turco - i find this much easier for lifting the puck out the zoner and down the ice with power

3) backhand - i just hold the stick normally and swing at it with the back of the stick and it seems to get it moving lol

first learn how to properly shoot with player stick and gloves. then transfer that to the goal stick with goal gloves. I just make the puck transition heel to toe on my stick and give it a good flick with my top wrist. When you get better at that then use the flex of the goal stick...its works awesome. But nothing makes a difference like practice. I used to only be able to get it to the blue line in the air when standing up, now I can clear it out past the redline in the air from my b-fly.
