LHS in the Northern NJ/NY Metro Area

Recommended Posts

IceHouse ProShop

111 Midtown Bridge Approach

Hackensack, NJ 07601

Whoa...this was a long, long drive...but anyhow...

Nice rink/facility

Well ordered proshop

not very large...average for a shop in a rink

RBK, Easton, NBH, etc. average selection of skates, sticks, and equipment...

Yes...it's the end of the season.....but i've commented/visited other places around the same time and I therefore think it is a fair comparison...

the lack of selection was a little disappointing considering the area that the shop is in....people in that area of NJ are used to spending money...since so many people who live or work in that area make a ton of money!

Not sure if they offer any skate customization services...

I was looking for the "internet cafe" section... wondered if modsquadhockey would be going on either at the counter...or in a section of the store

good natured skate lil type employee that when i asked "do you sell knives here?" responded politely with a "no" which i then followed up with "Do you sharpen skates here?" - also followed up by a polite answer although this time in the affirmative...to which i quickly replied "i'm just kidding...all staged...all staged...all staged..." (got the idea from the pinned thread regarding LHS workers and customers...)

IceVault

10 NEVINS ROAD

WAYNE, NJ 07470

Smaller overall facility than the Icehouse, but the pro shop is much, much larger...if you ever visit the ice rink in Vineland NJ the same group/architect msut have built this...but instead of a party room...the proshop extends much deeper back....

According to their add in THN (hockey news) this is the largest pro shop by square footage in NJ/Ny Metro area...It is pretty big....lots of sticks, lots of blades.... accessories, T-Shirts...

Some international hockey jerseys, a couple college, a couple OHL, IHL, QMJHL jerseys, etc. - nice change of pace... actually trying to stock beyond the norm

Branded Bauer suspenders and garters much nicer than A&R crap accessories...

A few more sticks and blade patterns than the average shop....

Graf, RBK, NBH, CCM skates, etc.

Golf monopoly for sale....

helped to salvage the trip (went the same day as the trip to IceHouse)...

just having some different stuff in stock was a welcome change!

West Side Skate and Stick

174 5th Avenue, Suite 504

New York, NY 10010

(5th Avenue between 22nd / 23rd, Fifth Floor)

Ok so if you can't find street parking in NYC...it sucks to have to pay for parking...the sales tax on parking is just under 19% (cf. with 8.5% sales tax on goods in NYC)...

So anyhow...small shop specializes in Graf, Custom Graf Skates, Custom Christian Blade orders, TAC Hockey sticks and shafts (FINLAND) currently low on stock- awaiting shipment from Europe)

Friendly staff.... one of the main guys is much more informed than the other..and also that same more informed person is also the European hockey equipment enthusiast of the two...skaing in the "technician's skate" the Graf 707....

Very attentive to details when giving measurements for custom product...

Maximum Edge authorized shop...although if you follow some of the past threads on NBH One90's you'll learn that for proper profiling advice you should have the person watch you on the ice or video...this limits the shop somewhat since they are not located at a rink...

The buzz is that this shop was started as a reaction to the lack of service at Chelsea Piers Rinks and NYC in general for hockey skate sharpening and repairs...

On the spot repairs... lift and shim installments, blade alignments...

Shop is a proponent of SuperFeet if warranted for the particular skater...they recommended against my using them because of my foot volume...in the NBH one90 and my foot depth...the skate would be too tight with Superfeet insoles...

plus the claim was my very, very , very flat feet would probably be anti-Superfeet arch supports putting too much pressure on my arches...

Hopefully the shop works out.... NYC needs a strong proshop....don't all the rich kids get custom skates anyhow? they can't really be buying off the rack can they?? j/k

Future test location for Graf's forthcoming custom footbed/orthotics system....

Where are you getting this information from? Being from New York City myself I for one have never even heard of this place before your post today. Their are plenty of good shops in the New York City area, you just gotta travel to the outer boroughs or Long Island to get to them. Sports Plus based in Queens with Stores on Long Island and Upstate NY can do pretty much any repair you ask, I've had boots punched out, steel changed, Skates converted from Ice to Roller, etc. So again you can get stuff done if you know where to go. Going back 6 years ago when I worked at Cosby's I had a lot of guys coming in and asking for me to sharpen their skates because they liked the job I did on them. So your saying the lack of places to get sharpenings is off because you can still get your skates done right in Midtown.

The return of a "mystery shopper", a one time customer that writes a review. Unfortunately he was a week too early! The shop is stocked after NBH, Easton, Sher-Wood, MissionItech, Warrior, and good old A & R booking deliveries. Timing is everything. Which, if you knew how good A & R's customer service and delivery is within the industry, you would understand why you see their products in so many pro shops. In fact, these shop reviews are out of whack with the timing of the hockey business cycle. Any reviewer should know the time to check out a shop is mid-Spring after booking deliveries of new product. In March one shop may look empty on inventory as they sold everything through waiting on booking deliveries while the over-stocked shop is showing last year's inventory and still some from Day 1 of opening.

The idea that since a pro team practices at the rink, that the pro shop will automatically have pro stock gear is another urban legend. I don't know about the Flyers, but if you think you can walk into Lou's practice rink and pick up Gomer's TPS OPS, you don't know Lou.

Cavs019, there hasn't been a T-Flex in the shop since before February 2001 when I started. That would be over 6 years ago. Do you have any more current information you could share? I just checked with another shop guy here. We never carried T-Flexes!!

jokerit1967, a long drive from where? There is also a huge sign right next to the front door on all the custom skate services available. How you missed that sign(2' x 3') is beyond me. Also, most of us carry pocket knives for helmet repairs, opening boxes, etc. If you wanted a knife, you probably could have borrowed one from any of us. Next time in, be sure to say hello.

Does anyone know when pro shops on LI will get the shipments of the new gear? Also, are there any good proshops on LI? I usually go to sports plus, but it is kind of small and iceworks is way overpriced.

NYHockey6, He is accurate regarding the LHS located at 174 5th Avenue. I believe these guys owned or worked at Blades,Boards and Skates which was in the rink at Chelsea Piers.

Sports Plus in Iceland just got a shipment of Easton and Mission One Piece Sticks about a week ago. They are slowly but surely getting more and more stuff in.

I wasn't doubting that the store actually existed, my whole thing was that not people know about it and the fact that Jokerit went on a "rant" saying their are no good shops in NYC besides that one which is not true.

Flyweights, we are still talking about 2001-2002. By 2003, we were giving those things away. When were you here last?

It was likely 01, my team was playing the Avalanche AAA's home and home one weekend. It was honestly the only time I was in the shop, but if the prices have improved since then then good for you guys, because the selection was pretty good for a rink shop.
