Anyone ever work at UPS?

Recommended Posts

Just curious...just applied there for a job during the summer. Interview and tour is all set up but was wondering if anyone had any experience there. I guess one of the side benefits is possibly seeing ppls hockey sticks come by so I can take them :P

It is generally a good job. They pay relatively well, you get to workout and it is a good company. There are even possibilities to move into something permanant later if you really like it. Plus it is a global company so you could even have opportunity to travel in a bunch of years if you put in that much time. For a summer job, though, it's great.

For all us Canadians, I work for Purolator (Canada's largest courier company).

Been there for 7 years. Have done all the jobs in the warehouse, now I manage there.

For the summer, it's a great job. Good workout, pay is decent, only downside is that they'll probably ask you to work 5 days a week. And when it's nice outside, you really don't want to be inside working.

Plus, if they like you, you can always work through the Xmas rush and next year as well.

I made it through 8 months.. one broken foot and a severly sprained ankle later and im done. It was a decent job I guess. I was really making any money though, I had to commute pretty far so after gas I was making around $5 an hour.

When you go for the tour, tell them you want to be a Loader/Scanner. If you ask to be an unloader they won't even consider you. If you can't handle knowing a bunch of zips and scanning every correct package while building box walls they will move you to unloading. If you're just a terrible worker they will get rid of you before you get into the union.

Don't expect big checks for the first month, if you even work that often. Add in Union dues and you're looking at $80 a week for $20 hours.

There are opportunities to move up, fairly quickly too. I was well on my way to running my own belt, after 6 months.

It wears on you though, especially with the people you work with. Unions are a slippery slope. They do help you alot but at the same time, if someone is a shitbag worker and they have seniority over you than they're untouchable. Sucks pretty bad when the guy that "picks" boxes off of the belt (basically a monkeys job) is making $25 an hour. While you're making $8-$9 working your ass off.

careless co-workers and union was why I left..serious it doesn't take much to get a job there so you get some people who are really challenged which is fine unless they're helping you left heavy loads and lifting heavy loads above you..

Under Paid Slaves

Amen to that!

I worked the preload shift (3am to 8am) and man was it rough. I made it 4 months. Unloading boxes all night long. If youre doing it for the money, it is not worth it, I cant stress that enough. The managers at my hub reminded me of a bully. I was never fast enough (even when I was going above average speed) and they always sent me home early.

The moral of the story is, its manual labor, which I will never do again for my bread and butter.

Yeah idk...I'm kinda stuck. I'd honestly wanna wait tables and get tips but there ain't any place that is hiring servers. I did the UPS thing cause it was that or going back to my old summer job which was manual labor too where the situation was sorta the same. And it also involved lots of paint fumes since I got stuck on paint crew a lot. UPS pays better...soo yeah idk. Totally forgot about Union fees, gah...but yeah I'll remember to ask about the loader/scanner.

They advertise that tuition assistance thing too...any of that kick in?

$1500 US a semester... Theres a few benefits. You can take a $2000 loan out through UPS and you only have to pay the interest($20 a month) but you have to be in school and work there for two years. I think it goes up to like $34,000 but you have to work there for like 20 years. The discounts are worthless.

Not sure if other hubs do it but if you don't misload or you catch bad bags you get weekly points. You can redeem them for gas cards and other things. 2 points = $1 if I recall.

Really, even at $1500 a semester its not really that amazing. $1500 doesn't even cover classes at a local community college let alone a four year university.

In conclusion, the job blows. They expect you to stay for a year. And it turns into 6 hours+ a day during Christmas + sundays.

You are eligable as soon as you are hired, but only some hubs offer it so make sure the one you are applying to has it. When I went in for my interview it was for a different facility which didn't have it so I had HR switch my application. I just had my first year anniversary this month. I work at an air hub though so it's more laid back because of the smaller volume (and I actually like my supervisors ha ha). We only have a 3 hour shift and on the average day we get done a half hour early.

I think its a pretty good place to work, when I turned 18 I applied and got hired, worked real hard, then 5 months later I was running my own outbound area as supervisor, not bad pay for an 18 year old, plus I was eligable for benefits and stock plans too. The raises are good too, once a year you are rated by peers and bosses, I had the buildings highest PT supervisor raise, at $80 per week. Plus they only promote from within which is a plus, if you stick with them in the long run you can make it a real good career, however in the beginning you do work your arse off.
