Unlimited skate baking?

Recommended Posts

I was talking with the guy at my LHS today and he said that while most skates should not be baked more than 3 times, Graf skates can be baked as often as you want. I have G5 Ultras and baked them once, they fit great and I have no desire to bake them again.

I have never heard this about Graf and am interested in your feedback.

You shouldn't have to bake any skate more than once. If a skate fits that poorly, you never should have purchased it in the first place.

What would be the point? Baking is overrated.

As to baking being overrated... I've wondered about that because although I like the "warm and cozy" feeling of putting on skates right after they come out of the skate oven...I was never really sure that it really made a noticeable difference for me... (I've only had pairs of skates baked once...)..

You shouldn't have to bake any skate more than once. If a skate fits that poorly, you never should have purchased it in the first place.

I didn't think the desire to seek out more comfort was synonymous with the skates being improperly fitted in the first place...

I was told by an older guy at a LHS (yes he was old - so I don't know if that means he is more knowledgeable -OR- if that means that he is more out of touch with actual data as to materials break in properties or of the reaction that occurs in modern skates due to baking) that baking not only served to "dial in fit" but also could be thought of as accelerating the break in process... so wouldn't multiple bakes help move a skate to that "broken in feeling" that many people prefer for leather type/leather based (whether synthetic or not) goods?

so if someone were willing to shorten the actual total time that a skate were to last...i.e. if the comfort zone of a broken in skate were more important to them...wouldn't that be enough reason to bake a skate more than once?

Just wondering because I have considered having one of my newer pair of skates baked again...

Speaking of baking.... I was at a LHS shop recently and the older guy doing the skate sharpening was asked by someone "how do i know if my skates can be baked" the LHS guy replied "well some skates have 'bake-able' material" the customer held up his skates and said "are these bake-able ?" the LHS guy replied while looking at the skates "well they're not Bauer Turbos but...they don't have very much in the way of bake-able materials"

I started laughing... I hadn't heard the name "Bauer turbos" or as one friend of mine affectionately called his skates 'Bos. *sigh* where's Evgeny Davydov and the Micron Quadraflexes ?

or even better where is Denis Savard and my Daoust 501 National Skate poster?

Grafs can be baked multiple times because of the lack of thermoformable materials in the skates.

Those materials will not hold its memory/break down if baked multiple times.

If this is true, I'd like to hear why JR said this about his new Mission AG's..."they still need some breaking-in to do - at least one more bake". I'm not trying to be a dick, just wondering if JR can explain it.

As for baking being overrated, I think if the skate is meant to be baked it's a good idea to do it. When I bought my Bauer 8000's I didn't have time to bake them that day so just took them home and wore them a bit while watching TV. They were really stiff and hurt like hell. After having them baked they fit my foot much, much better. No more stiffness in the wrong places.

I baked my RBKs twice to get the fit right. At the end of the day if it fits perfect after the first bake, then fine. If not, theres no harm in trying another bake to get the fit right.
