Skate fit question

Recommended Posts

I was wondering. I recently got back into hockey about a year ago, and when I did I bought a cheap pair of Bauer Vapor 5's. When I play for a while my arch's begin to ach like no other pain. My heel also feels like its just swimming around in my boot. What skates would be better to address these issues ?

This may be really unhelpful, but it sounds like your skates don't fit. You tried them on and all that beforehand right?

Also how heavy are you? Maybe the boot has broken down quickly or stretched (that could explain the heel slippage)

getting fit properly should help you clear up those problems.

do you tie your skates really tight to try and keep your foot from moving. If so it sounds like your skates are to big and you are cutting off the blood circulation to your foot when you crank down on the laces.

Thats sorta what I figured. But I did the finger thing, where you put your foot all the way to the front and squeeze your finger in....

How much space should there be?

Don't just slide your foot forward. Kick the toe of the boot on the floor and really get your foot moved up. Any more than a pencil space and the boot is to big. Remember when you lean forward on your skates your foot is being forced back and the interior of the skate will compress a little.

Also get the correct width. If the boot feels like it is squeezing the side of your feet it's to narrow. If it feels sloppy and you feel side to side movement it's to wide. A nice snug feeling is what you want.

You should try getting a super foot insole, that would really help with the arch support and lift the heal slightly to better lock your ankle. You should maybe check out a 735 graf if you want to go that high in price because that skate really locks the ankle in place

Cheers

For an adult? About a pencil's thickness.

My skates are actually little big for me. Is there anything I can do to make the best of I have before buying new ones? Some sort of insole or something? It'll be at least a couple of months before I can get new ones.

Depends how big they are on you. A thicker insole as well as thicker socks would probably help out some. You can't go too thick otherwise the skate may become too shallow for your foot.

If the skates are too big, there's not really much you can do. I was in a similar situation with Vector Pros. I had similar symptoms to you: swimming foot and arch pain. I even bought Superfeet insoles that helped a bit, but couldn't completely correct the sizing issue. Eventually, I bit the bullet and bought new skates.

Thanks, I just ordered some insoles to buy me some time before I have enough for new skates.

Any idea how long they last if playing 3-4 times a week?

Ya they were fit wrong. Horribly wrong, 2 sizes to big wrong.

After buying 3 pairs of skates that were the wrong size, here's a helpful hint. Buy skates that are 1/2 size smaller than what you think fit. When you get on the ice, the extra strain you put on them will stretch them out. And if it doesn't, your LHS can pop out the pressure points. There's nothing they can do to fill in skates that are too big.
