Habs offer 4-year deal to Markov

TSN's sister station in Quebec RDS reports that the Montreal Canadiens have offered defenceman Andrei Markov a four-year contract worth just over $5 million a season.

Markov, 28, is eligible to become an unrestircted free agent on July 1. Markov's agent Don Meehan has already indicated that his client would like to re-sign with the Canadiens.

RDS also reports that the veteran defenceman will not need surgery after a knee-on-knee hit in the semifinal game of the World Hockey Championship.

Markov has spent five seasons with the Canadiens. He had six goals and 43 assists last season, with a +2 rating while accumulating 56 penalty minutes.

Seems about fair to me, whats your take on the offer?

I hope the Wings sign him, hes the perfect guy to transition from the Lidstrom years that will come to an end very soon.

He's said all a long that he wants to stay in Montreal, and it wouldn't take 6+ to keep him.

Hopefully he signs, and Souray is close too.

Last week I heard/read/was told that Gainey said Markov was very close to signing, and talks were going well with Big Shel.

Cap hit is the average of the Contract right? So it could be 5 / 5.75 / 6.25 / 6.75 and still be a Cap hit of more than 5 M per...right?

Good deal for both sides, Markov is the teams best defenceman and the Canadiens really need him. Now all the habs have to do is sign Souray. Souray is not as good as Markov, but some team is probabley going to overpay him. Probabley close to 7 million a year is my guess.

I think they overpayed him. Don't get me wrong he's a solid defense, but 5.5 a year is pushing it. But then again had they not signed him, someone else would have and the Habs would have been in even more sh*t depth-wise on D.

He's making 5.75 and I think we will see a few more D get that this off-season.

Although Markov is a pretty decent defenceman, I think if they played the market they could have signed a much better defenceman for 5.75 per year easily.

well markov is the second best next too souray if you asked me and markov played with souray alot on the power play

Markov is uch better than Souray, Souray only has his big shot, other than that he is pretty useless. If the team is winning by 1 goal with a minute left they want Markov on th ie before Souray.

He's not the guy who's going to score on the PP but he's awesome defensivly and can feed the offense with great passing. Defenitly in the NHL's top 10 defensemens. Don't just look at numbers. Ask Ovechkin, he claims markov is one of the best and he always tries not to go on his side.

Ahh top 10 is kind of pushing it IMO.

I think he is top 10, Lidstrom, Pronger, Niedermayer, Zubov, Kaberle, Visnovsky, Philips, Chara. Are the only ones IMO better than Markov which would class him about 9th in the league, alot of people underestimate Markov because he doesnt score as many points as the other top d-man.

I am not saying that because of the fact he doesn't score . I personally think Volchnkov is one of the best in the leauge , and he hardly ever scores. But is great in his own end.
