WOW...NBH one90 shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

i was at my LHS today....and to my amazement the one90 shoulder pads were in stock. Tried a pair on and could not take them off, unfortunately the price tag wasnt exactly the prettiest figure for my credit card.

does anyone have these? are they worth the $150?

If your a beer leaguer then no its not worth it. Remember you want it for utility not for fashion or what not. It doesnt make you play better but if you play full contact it'll do its job which is protect you.

Put it this way, with or without it chances are your game is staying the same.

if you decide to get them look online because most places have them for 99$, so unless you really want to support the local shop, you should save your 50 green

Actually, when I held these, I wasn't very impressed. Didn't seem like there was anything too revolutionary about them really. Although they were very light.

The elbow pads and shin pads are very comfortable but the shoulder pads feel a little off. Can't beat the fit of the 9k shin pad though.

the 9k shin actually didn't fit my shin at all...just wasn't snug. The one90s couldn't have fit any better though.

As for the shoulders, I haven't seen them but they look decent. The other protective is awesome, so i don't see how these are any different. I'm more of a fan of the jofa/rbk/easton 800(what i use) style shoulder caps.

OK...I really don't get this argument. Just because you play in a beer league you shouldn't look into wearing the best protection you can get?

Whether you play full contact or not, protection is still important. In fact, I make the argument that beer leaguers should get the best protection they can, because players are not as skilled and can be irresponsible with their skating and their sticks. This makes you more vulnerable to injury.

Shoulder pads don't make ANYONE better...NHL or beer league. But good pads offer all people good protection...NHL or beer league.

Well the way I see it bud, most people in beer league aren't fond of paying lots of money for high end equipment. I work in an arena so I'm not pulling shit out of my ass. The majority just get the low-mid end stuff and enjoy the game. Also as for protection, your not going to get hit as you would in a NHL or even AAA. So for a fraction of the cost you can get another shoulder pad that does the job.

Anyways if everyone had the high end equipment in beer league there would be a lot of qwakers against them haha. Because you know, we're not superstars.......yet.

you could get hit almost just as hard. some of those big guys could throw thier weight around. and if you have the money why not? if you like how they feel and have the money to spend go for it. comfortable equipment can be hard to find some times.

ps. hockey monkey has one 90 shoulders for 94 bucks

I am not talking about the cost of equipment...I am talking about the argument of NOT wearing suitable protection. There is no argument from me that most people buy the most amount of protection they can afford. I was not accusing you of pulling "shit out of your ass". You are correct on that point.

Where I disagree is with the statement about the need for high end protection. What you fail to account for is that at the elite level people are stronger and can take a hit as well as hit hard. What do most people in the NHL wear for shoulder pads? SBDII...SP60...5030s...old school Jofa...basically toilet paper with shoulder caps. Why do you think that is? One reason: mobility over protection. They certainly don't wear the most expensive or the best.

My opinion is simple. If you can afford to buy the best, you should be more inclined to wear top of the line equipment at beer league levels than at the elite level. Most of us don't play for our career...so protecting your body should be the top priority.

I can't speak for the shoulders. But I do have the one90 shin and elbow pads. Rediculously light and fit great. The mouisture wicking liner is nice, as is the grip print. Expensive, but nice if you have a little extra expendable income.

In most beer leagues there isn't contact, you don't need big bulky shoulder pads. Most mid-end shoulders provide plenty of protection for the beer leagues... hell, most of them are good enough for checking leagues. Personally, I think that you should buy whatever you want but you probably don't need the higest end shoulder pads in non-contact league.

when ive played beer league in the summer after junior is done i almost never wear shoulder pads. My main concern was just the protection issue. Since the pads were so light when i tried them on, it just left me wondering how much protection they offer.

I would not call the One90 a bulky shoulder pad...but I would call it top end. I use the V-12, which is the older version of the V-14....which is essentially what the One90 is. I do not consider them bulky...very mobile and comfortable, and fully protective. I wear these to my games, as I have been slashed, elbowed, but-ended, cross-checked, and suffered other forms of abuse..yet our league is considered non contact. The open hockey I play in NY and in the DC/VA area is of much higher skill than my league...yet I never suffer that type of abuse. In fact, I don't even wear shoulder pads in most cases for this - when I do I throw on the SBDII. It is amazing how much more intense the hockey is when played at a higher skill level...yet the more skilled players tend to truly respect one another, thus keeping sticks and elbows down.

Since we've gone of topic...I've been wearing the Reebok padded shirt for beer league and love it. Just enough padding to absorb incidental hits and stick work but very lightweight and no restriction to mobility at all.

A couple weeks ago I caught a slapshot in the ribs (I play defense) and it hurt but barely left a bruise and I was able to continue like nothing happened.

Tried the One90 shoulder pads a couple weeks ago, definitely my next pair when I have the money. Unless you really want to support your shop I've seen them as low as 93 online with free shipping. Big and bulky is something these are definitely not, very low profile and close fitting. Not to mention light and comfortable.

MLSman I can agree with you with your points so no point arguing. What it boils down to is if you got the money why not eh? If not then whatever.

Jeff W where did you get that from?

The one90 shoulders aren't bulky compared to other high end shoulder pads but they are more bulky than other popular beer league shoulder pads such as the sherwood 5030. They seem very protective, wish my LHS had them in XL so I could actually try them on.

If you try on the Nike V-14...they are just like it. The front pad that velcro's to the front is a little different, and less restrictive. They are very light and comfortable. Worth every penny.

No arguments here....just disagreed on some points. We never argue here...only discuss emotionally! :P

If you can afford it....no reason not to protect yourself...seems to make common sense to me. When I am working on a budget I still look for top end stuff on clearance...like hockeymonkey closeouts or hockeyworld specials.

I got mine at Hockey Giant but it looks like they don't have them anymore. You can find them at hockey monkey for about $35 bucks.

The ONE90's are easily the most protective i have seen in a long time yet still as mobile as my...nevermind, mine only say they are "Made in the U.S.A.." But for sure they are older than dirt. :P No protection, 4 hard caps of thin plastic. At least 25 yrs old. Great shoulders. But anywho, im getting off topic. The ONE90's are top end , feel great, got 'Dri-fit' tech., not to mention they look decent, if not down right good. ONE90's next for these shoulders. I would only end up wearing them if i play somewhere very competitive anyways. Which i would like, but haven't found a constant game yet here in Vancouver. But always good to have it when you need it.

I barely wear the ones i got unless i have to.

...........Also intrigued by the rollerhockey padded 'Dri-fit' jersey's.
