LCD repair question?

Recommended Posts

A really close friend of the family is moving to Texas and he has a 32" Dell LCD tv that he doesn't want to take with him (he wants something new). He told me I could have it for $250, the problem is he said the LCD needs repaired. I was just wondering as I've been asking around and haven't found a definite answer, to replace the LCD would it be more expensive than just finding a new TV with HD and also 32"? I was just wondering because the picture looks great, I just was wondering a ballpark figure from those who might know how much it would cost to get the LCD fixed.

Thanks in advance,

If the picture looks great, why does the LCD need to be replaced? The LCD is the large panel that *is* the picture, mind you.

Ask him exactly what is wrong with the TV, what trox said is right, the lcd is the picture so what he told you doesn't make sense. If I were you I wouldn't buy it unless he got it fixed before you bought it. If something is wrong with the LCD it will most likely cost you much more than 250 to get if fixed.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. I had called and left a message about what was wrong with it and he called me back and told me the picture he recently sent me of it working was before the tv went out. The picture doesn't work anymore as to why he's selling it. He said if nothing comes from it, he might just give it to me to see what I can find about how to fix it...I hadn't been over to his house in months and so yeah, he said the picture went out a couple weeks ago. Should I even bother trying to get it fixed or just tell him to pitch it?

i thought DELL had 3 yr warranty

get the serial number.. call dell.. and see what happens...

Its worth a shot.

Dell LCD's are top notch. You pay for a nice warranty with them too. It doesn't hurt to try.

Usually the backlights or the inverters go first.. I have fixed a couple of computer LCD panels for like $50 by replacing the inverter (the thing that powers the backligts).

If it is the LCD panel itself, its gonna be cheaper to get a new one.

Nobody is going to be able to give you an exact price until they know exactly what is wrong with it. Could be a $10 part, could be a $500 part.

+1 on what Chadd says-

Think of it this way:

What you are asking is like calling a mechanic and telling him " My car is making a noise, how much will it cost to fix?"

Without someone doing diagnostics on it the sky is the limit. Most places will charge you for the diagnostic, but will usually waive the fee if you have them repair it.

Until then you just wont know.

Definitley check the Dell warranty- you might be suprised and end up with a new TV
