At least formula one is a competition of the world's premier performance car manufacturers pitting cutting edge technology against each other. NASCAR is basically just seeing who can bolt the biggest chevy engine together and getting some guy named Bubba to whip the thing around a circular track a few times.

Speaking of money making sports, you shouldn't limit it to sports popular only in North America. Take for example Formula one racing. The NFL and NBA can't hope to match the amount of revenue generated by it. As an example, take Michael Schumacher, the driver for Ferrari. He gets paid in the neighbourhood of $42 million dollars US TAX FREE every year. By tax free, I mean Ferrari pays his taxes for him. Therefore, his contract would be the equivalent of a North American contract worth something like $75-80 million US per year. Add to that the costs of cars and engines, the second driver, the pit crew, fuel, research and development (which is the heart of F-1 racing) which probably adds up to another $100 or so million per year. And the teams are still making money. Tells you how much revenue they are generating.

You are pretty much on the ball...you all would be amazed about the F1 merchandise that was for sale in Europe. Heck, you know it's popular when people are making knock off's of the items to sell on street corners. I remember walking by a shop in Florence to see a Ferrari jacket going for 255 Euro.

But the quandary you end up with by having these big name manufacturers in F1 is that it makes for an uneven playing field, which leads to what you have now is Schuey winning 10 of the 11 races this year. In NASCAR you atleast have somewhat of a even playing field with the regulations that they have set forth limiting what you can do to the car. In F1 it's pretty much anything goes, as long as you have the cash to pay for it...the result is you only have two or three teams that have a legitimate chance to win a race on any given day.

I would consider it a major sport in the US. NASCAR, NBA, NFL and MLB are the 4 biggest sports in the US. If you consider NASCAR a sport. If memory serves me correct NASCAR has the highest paying TV deal ever signed.

Someone alrdy said it but it really is that simple. People like watching sports they can play. They have something to relate to, anyone can pick up a basketball and shoot it into the hoop but the average american cant lace a pair of skates up and still keep the balance to take a shot.

The NFL is by far the most profitable major sport.

I am going to have to disagree and say NASCAR is.

The NASCAR teams do not make profits like the NFL teams do. The TV deal for NASCAR goes to the organizing body, not directly to the teams. The teams still have to generate income from other sponsors to cover expenses.

not sure if hockey really is considered a major sport anymore. I think if the game was marketed somehow more towards minorities in the U.S. it would get the game on a roll, I say this because many minorities never even begin to think of playing hockey for expenses, lack of exposure ect... baseball, football, basketball attract them. I think if the NHL knew what they were doing they would do a better job of marketing Jarome Iginla.

Also if you look at attendances , just when looking at the NBA and NHL, the NHL actually for the most part fills higher percentages of its arenas better than NBA games. I believe Washington, Phoenix, and Dallas are the three NHL teams that do worse than their NBA counterpart teams. And also you have to consider the fact that the NHL has the UHL, ECHL, and AHL which all have teams with huge local followings. So compared to the NBA or NFL which don't have strong minor league systems, I think the NHL has an edge there.

Also if you look at it on a whole, hockey has a North American following that the other sports do not have. And even on an international level the only major sport that can compete with hockey is basketball.

yah, supposbly the nhl had lower ratings in the usa then spongebob square pants. hockey is so much more tense than basketball and such though. like if u were watching a nba OT and a nhl OT which would be more tense? the nhl of course. but yah the nhl players are getting jipped. they play 82 games a year. football sure its a more physical demanding sport, but u have like 1-2 weeks to rest. while in the nhl u only have like 1 day, 2 if your lucky.
