I think I ruined my Oakley Visor

Recommended Posts

So I just got a Oakley shield cage combo and I decided to use an off brand anti-fog spray on it after my first game with it. This was a bad idea. It caused the anti-fog coating on the inside to kind of spiderweb and go white. If I scrape at the coating that has spiderwebed with my fingernail and then rub it to remove the coating, it goes back to clear with no fog protection. I can deal with that with the off brand anti-fog spray. My question is, is there an easy way to get all of the Oakley anti-fog coating off the shield and down to bare plastic? I tried all kinds of things (rubbing alcohol, windex, really hot water, Goo Gone) on small patches to the side and nothing has worked.

Any suggestions? If I got some Oakley AFR spray would this heal the part that is messed up, or do I now own an expensive piece of plastic and steel?

Here are some pictures of the damage, not the greatest I know.

and apparently I'm not the only one, and I really need to look down the board:

A buddy of mine did the same thing -- yup, you're out of luck. That's why I stick to Itech....less complicated.

Thats the exact reason why i never got an oakley because i could just stick with my itech and not worry about that kind of stuff happening

Happens to everyone here. I surmise that it has something to do with the severe humidity here as well. The snowflakes come out after 1-2 games and we just wipe the shield down with a smooth cloth. I took a lot of 3M Anti-scratch solution to mine and it helped a little bit but not very much. You could try it since the visor is shot. Good luck.

Yes it does indeed say only use Oakley solution. I've had 1Xcel and Oakley visors for 10 years (Oakley bought 1Xcel--they are the same thing) and I have never used the solution anyways--I usually just get sweat on the visor. You'll just have to get another one.

Ouch! I didn't think off-branded spray had that extreme of an affect. I've used Pro-guard anti-fog sprays on oakley visors without anything wrong if I didn't have any AFR on me...

I've seen pro-guard trash oakleys before.

Just seeing this thread makes me all sentimental about my old 1Xcel certified aviator that I modded into a Heatley. I couldn't find any AFR, so I used soapy water.

Bad idea.

I miss that visor, because the best part of the story is that I bought it used and near perfect for $10.00.

I've learned my lesson. I'm going to stick with a full cage and deal with the bars in my vision. I'm just pissed it was a $60 mistake. Seems like Oakley would have a more robust product for a sport like hockey.

It works just fine if you follow the directions. I don't understand why people spend $60 on a visor and then try to save $2 on using non-Oakley cleaner. I still have one of the black bottles of AFR and they changed that design a couple years ago. It lasts forever.

My LHS doesn't sell it so I would have had to buy it online.

I don't deny it's my fault, but it's still an overly sensitive product. Everyone with Itech visors has said they've had no such problems.

Again, I've learned my lesson.

The Itechs are much more durable in that regard, rarely fog up and they're generally cheaper to boot. If they would just retail something like the Oakley straight small, I would be in heaven.

I didn't have any fog-free solution of any kind with my first Oakley.... I used a pea-size drop of Softsoap hand soap, and lukewarm water with mine. It helped clean the visor, but then next game it fogged pretty bad, so I bought some AFR spray... must have reacted with the Softsoap, and webbed up, all little star shaped splits, and cracks...

I hadn't used my Oakley shield/cage combo in three weeks until today. When I pulled the visor out of the helmet bag, it had spider web marks all over the shield. Even the part that is connected to the cage portion is cracked on both sides. I use the Oakley AFR spray with a microfiber cloth and nothing else. Any ideas on why this would happen?

I remember seeing the spider web marks on my oakley visor after not wiping it down after a game. I think they were the salt particles from my sweat that had dried. I took some water and a towel and wiped it all off with no problems.

I just bought a new 8k lid and was thinking about trying a visor. After reading all of this I am staying with my Bauer True Vision Cage. No fog, scratches or cleaning.

This thread is ironic timing for me...

I am/was using the Oakley Shield/Cage combo. Was fogging up on me pretty badly so I took off the bottom cage part, and used only the visor.

Still, fogged.

Okay, so I took a dremel tool and cut out some of the top part of the visor for more air flow.

Still, fogged.

Used FogZero paste. Still, fogged.

Completely frustrated, I went to Autozone yesterday and bought Rain-X anti fog for the inside of windshields. As soon as I applied it, it was snow flake central across the visor. I disregarded the warning about using only Oakley sprays, so it was an expensive decision on my part.

I ordered a Z-Leader shield today with the side vents hoping it helps with the fogging. It's hard to believe that visors are that different with fogging from one manu to the next, but I guess so.

EDIT: Also, ordered the NBH 8500 cage (after searching and reading the threads on cages) in case this new visor doesn't work out either.

Although I don't have any methods to fix damaged Oakley visors, I do have some simple preventative advice. DON'T BE STUPID, USE THE DAMN AFR SPRAY. It's not like it cost $5 per drop. Any half way descent LHS that sells Oakley shields should have it and if they don't, spend the money to order it. It doesn't take a Ph.D. to figure out that $20 ($8 for the spray, $12 S&H) is still better than $50+ for a new shield. Besides, how hard is it to piggyback the spray on your weekly OPS order.

Bottom line, get the AFR spray and save us all the pain of you crying about how you ruined your Oakley shield because you couldn't spare the extra $8.

Wow - thank you for sharing this very insightful and earth shattering advice.

I don't think anyone was 'crying' about ruining their shields, only sharing their experiences.

Here is your invitation to getting a life.

No shit. Giving people an insight into how much care they'll need to take if they decide to go with an Oakley, not crying. I'm a big boy, it was my fault, but I'll still never buy Oakley again.
