twister18 1 Report post Posted July 17, 2007 Sorry if this has been covered before, I tried to search for a similar topic, but came up empty....Anyway, I am an assistant coach for a 2nd year high school hockey program and am wondering how frequently you guys had practices (either "captains practices" or more organized practices) during the summer months? Our HS season here runs mid november to mid feb. The guys (and 1 girl) are also in a summer league right now (they play 5 games plus playoffs over the next 7 weeks). The Current set-up we have is and hour and a half of on-ice practice mon and friday, and 2 hrs dryland tues wed thurs. Their games are mainly an sundays and monday nights. I'm kind of butting heads with some of our parents as i think this may be too much for the "off" season, especially since we currently have only 10 kids in the program (one quit yesterday b/c it was too much). Just curious to see what everybody else does, or did when they were playing in High School.edit- I see the post above about "off season training", but that seems to be all individul programs, I'm looking to see what other coaches have/had their teams do each week in the off season....thx

All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Keep up what your doing if you ask me. Our team does similar to what your doing just one less off ice session. We only do 2 off ice sessions a week during the summer. But the way I look at it is, its a high school sport. How come hockey players should take off the summer work outs? Football players are constantly working hard all year, especially during summer. I would say that the hockey programs should take it just as seriously. GoalieGirl 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 For me, summer is one practice a week and one game a week, plus Skate N' Shoots when they have them and other clinics that they need goalies for.
TCsnipes9 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 My teams summer program has always been as followed, starting the Monday after we get out of school:Dry-land from 7:30-10 -Monday thru ThursdayOn-Ice from 12-2:30 -Monday/WednesdayOptional extra ice from 12-2:30 -Tues/ThursRoller Hockey games at a local outdoor rink from 10- whenever on Fridays80% of us were in Elite Leagues/Rink Rats or whatever else as well. Me and a couple team-mates also helped out with the girls on-ice camps on monday and Wednesday nights. Worked out well because my other games were primarily on Tuesday and Thursday.Edit- Keep in mind we had our whole Varsity and JV so it was about 25-30 kids at on-ice and dry-land. cougarscaptain87 12 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 when i was a captain of my highschool team for 2 years, the captain practices were known as "optional" but if the captains decided there should be a practice you better get your ass to the rink. it was interesting, but i wouldnt necessary reccomend it to every team. Oberon 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 What is this captain practices you guys talk about? Many state high school leagues mandate periods of time in the offseason when there can be no school-organized practices, or practices with any school officials present. So, the captain(s) of the team run things during these times, and just happen to call the coach every night to chat.

No. That's from the old Minnesota Fighting Saints of the WHA. My first pro hockey game - Jan. 1, 1975 (or 1976 - so long ago), at the St Paul Civic Center. What I remember most were the see-thru boards.

jon93 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2007 What do you guys do for dryland, i really need some ideas of what you do. Trying to get my team in shape and be a leader, hoping to get a assistant captain position as a sophmore. So i was thinking of planning this on my own but need some ideas. I was thinking of starting off with a 1/2 a mile run and then for the rest of it do sprints and hills. It wont be much but we need to be in shape.
