SCATMAN 33 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 Played my 3 yearly game as a Goalie last night :P Had so much fun! Its great getting in the goals every now and then just to see what its like on the other end and to give yourself some extra appreciation of what the full time Goalies go through.Half thinking about trying it out a lil seriously now lolHow ofter do all you field players jump in net? and do you have a ball when you do? Patrick67 1 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 It's the only sport I know of where it's fun to be a goalie.
davis 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 I used to play in net up until I was 13 or so, but then started playing defence and have stuck with that (with occasional placement on the right wing/centre) ever since. I did put on the goalie gear once last year but I sucked up a storm...don't think I'll bother with that again, haha. It is pretty fun though, after those first few warm-up shots at least. ash_96 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 I love going in net, but i hate it when i have to use bad gear. I play a few times with good gear and really enjoyed, so when our inline goalie couldnt make it i offered to go in. Then they pull out this old school franklin gear! After getting hit in the shoulders and ribs, i kinda lost the enjoyment! But its always fun to glove someone or shut out a powerplay or breakaway! Powerfibers 8 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 We had to throw someone in net the other night. 3 seconds before the game starts, the referee comes up and says, "He's got the pads on the wrong legs." The ref was laughing his arse off thinking we did it to him on purpose. The ref offered to give him time to switch after the 1st. Goalie says, "Why bother?"Hilarious. We won too, our first game all year. Unbelievable.
SCATMAN 33 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 ^^^ lol and congrats on the win! I see fresh (usually junior) Goalies put the pads on backwards their first time gearing up by themselves or with help of parent loli have to say that using decent gear helped a lot too, but i dont think using Mission D1's in net was a good idear... lol cant help it i guess! Powerfibers 8 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 I guess that the skate issue really comes into play. The few times when we have had to borrow goalie gear, we debate whether the skater should use the goalie skates if he can fit into them. Some say "no, you'll be falling all over" and others say "you cannot go down fast enough without them." It's also hard to tie the pads onto regular skates. What do you guys think? davis 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 I made the full time switch about 4 months ago, and i'll never look back. I love it in net.....More power to ya, man. I ain't got the guts for it...When I put on the goalie gear last year, all I could think about the entire game was when Cujo got drilled in the head with the slapshot. oggy_3 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 At the end of the season this year we had some extra ice time so i decided i wanted to play net the first time all i tryed to do were the butterfly slides and weird moves liek that after that ice time i realised jsut was not possible so the next ice time i just tryed to stop the puck and for some reason i was terrified of the puck i knew i had top of the line hear on but i didn;t know what it was anyways the funnist thing for me was getting the puck and trying to flick it down the ice, yes i know pretty sad
ktang 34 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 I used to go in the nets 5 or so times a year in rental equipment paid for by my desperate teams, but I can't find a place to rent goalie equipment in Calgary.Lots of fun, but too expensive to get the equipment. Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted August 6, 2007 Ktang, head over to the GoalieStore.com bulletin board. There are a ton of Calgarians, and I'm sure you'd either find guys willing to donate old used gear or loan you a set.I guess that the skate issue really comes into play. It's also hard to tie the pads onto regular skates. What do you guys think? It's really, REALLY hard to play in skates with a player's profile on the runners. The longest player profile I've ever heard of is 13' - the shortest goalie radius I've ever seen was 26'. It's just damn near impossible to keep your balance. That said, it should be pretty easy to tie a pair of modern pads (with toe-ties instead of toe-straps) onto player skates. fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 I played goalie a few times for my old old old team, actually better than the actual goalie in a sense that I played more of a positional game, and had a faster glove (played little league baseball a couple of years). Only prob was that I didnt use the goalie stick that often.Have since stopped playing goalie due to my bad knees, and usually just defend at the point. Not that there is anything wrong with that... :D I already obsess over my equipment; imagine if I got goalie equipment, too? I will check out that GoalieStore.com website - thanks.I've always rented goalie skates (even when they didn't have my size), but one of my team-mates didn't and had the toe-cap on his skate loosened. sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2007 We had the husband of our goalie (yea, our goalie was a chick) my first season. He played in net and totally sucked. I found cheap goalie equipment on ebay and a local pawn shop. I"m not that fast skating out but my hand eye coordination was pretty good. After learning BASIC goalie positioning to help teach kids (6-8 years old), I started playing goalie part time. Playing it really helped my coaching. I also found it more fun than skating out when playing harder teams. Lots of action. I wish I had enough games in the season to let others try it so they'd not bitch at goalies when they let soft ones in. Of the 2 leagues I play in, I get about 6-8 games in net a season. First time I went back to regular skates, I was not used to the rocker. After playing in net about 20 times now, I don't notice it anymore. Playing goalie also give you a perspective on playing Defence and teaches you one big lesson "don't screen your own goalie"!. As a forward I've learned that soft shots from the point doesn't get you very far. It's really good experiance. Especially for a youth coach to try.
crazykeeper3317 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2007 well about 7 years ago i picked up hockey and started off playing as a winger until the club had a pair of old pads used by the pro teams old keeper and i mean old lol so i thought lets give it a try and i was there 10 years old trying to play in 34" pads dint work out very well but i loved it unfortunatley buying my own pads was out of the question so i kept playing up front for ice and bought some koho pads from our LHS they were basicaly a big pillow with a plastic cover on them but it did the trick for my first few years playing roller where i decided i didnt want to play out anymore, got to say it sounds odd saying i like getting pelted with pucks three times a week but it is lol eventualy managed to buy some second hand pads from the club once i grew into em and ive never looked back
