Back to basics

Recommended Posts

It will become available when it becomes available. Nothing you can do will speed up the process but there's a few things you can do(like repeatedly asking or trying to pad your post count) that can slow that option down considerably.

When what becomes available? That's what I am asking about.

And are you saying that this thing that becomes available is based on how many posts one makes?

If this is answered somewhere in another topic, could someone please point me to the info. Thanks much.

Don't worry about it, it(the gear exchange) will become available eventually. :)

Right on, thanks. I think I get it.

I'll just let it be and trust in the mysterious ambiguity of this process. ;)

Weird, well glad they could clear it up for you.

Lucky for me I can't use them hooks...all my shots would be 50 feet up in the air! First time I used the Lindros, I took a shot from the hash marks and it went over the glass...

Just gotta wrap your wrists over the puck a bit more and not follow through so high. With a little practice, shots -- esp. wristers -- become hummers! But it's sort of "cheating" to the pure purests. That's what everyone told Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita at first too when they were ripping shots from their banana blades!

Just wanted to get this thread going again and see if any of you are experiencing a similar frustration with going back to basics in terms of gear, specifically sticks.

I found the absolute perfect stick for me with a tip from Jarick -- a Sherwood RM19 Stastny from a LHS in Minnesota (Hat Trick Hockey) -- back in January. Paid $89 for it on clearance. By far the best stick i have ever used in my life.

Broke it, got it repaired once. After the second break, my buddy who was to repair it forgets it on the bench, and of course the rink maintenance guy trashes it that night.

Apparently, Hat Trick has had a special relationship with SWD, who have been making special Coffey PRO sticks and blades for them for years. Their PRO Coffeys became the Stastny last year (picture a Coffey with slightly less curve depth, slightly more closed face, and a shorter blade length). So, these sticks can't be bought anywhere else. And as luck would have it, Hat Trick is no longer going to order these sticks from Sherwood because they didn't sell well. In fact, I got the last one.

And as I have just learned from my latest purchase of an RM19 Coffey, the current RM19 SOPs offered for retail sale are totally different than the RM19 I bought from Hatrick -- heavier, not that well balanced, shaft is not concave, blade is not as stiff or responsive, feel is not as good, etc.

I am doubtful that Hat Trick will be able to get these sticks for me as a SOP, and even if they can, I am guessing there will be a minimum order of at least 3 and they will run about $200 each. I'm waiting to hear what they have to say.

My point is trying to get back to basics -- something that you know works well for you --- has never seemed so freakin difficult. In trying to simplify, I have accumulated enough sticks to outfit a team. Quite the paradox.

Is anyone else struggling with finding that perfect stick, or piece of gear, which has worked great for you in the past but has now disappeared with the changing times?

TPS discontinued the XN10 so I stocked up on as many as I could find. Now the problem is that I don't like the way their new blades feel and I may have to go back to wood if I can't get my favorite curve in the old style composite blade.

The curve that worked best for me was a Gretzky retail; toe curve, lower lie. They don't sell anything close to it any more, so I have been thinking about going back to wood blades so that I can curve and shave them.

But, nobody is selling wood blades...

Sherwood has a new RM-19 custom program that allows you to choose between 9 or 10 patterns, 2 shaft sizes, grip (or none) and flex and get your name stamped on it. As I understand, the minimum is one unit and the price is pretty reasonable. Might be hard to find retailers with the program but that should help you find the right pattern, etc. SWD's new RM-19's are pretty nice from what I've seen.

I know this -- I have a Coffey SOP, and another one coming (ordered from back in May!!!). The problem is what I stated above:

"Apparently, Hat Trick has had a special relationship with SWD, who have been making special PRO Coffey sticks and blades for them for years. Essentially, these were prostock RM19s with a custom blade made only for retail sale for Hat Trick. I'm still waiting to hear from them to see if I can get them, but I am not too hopeful...

I was at Hat Trick a couple weeks ago and they've gotten rid of almost all their Sherwood stuff...their shelves are pretty bare for a hockey store built into a popular rink right before hockey season starts. They had a sign up that they were going to either move or change ownership or something, so I'd check up with them again about the SOP business.

Anyways, I suppose trying to adjust to a different pattern is out of the question at this point? Like a Robitaille or Lindros?

Hey Jarick (The man who started this whole thing!),

It's not just that I loved that Stastny pattern -- although that's a big part of it. It's that the performance of that particular RM19 was better than anything I have ever used before. It was absolutely perfect for me. I had finally found "my stick." I could pull things off without haven't to think about it or overplay the puck. My production went way up; I found the net with so much more ease. I was even named MVP at a tourney using that stick. I trusted the stick, and it never let me down ('till I snapped it....twice). Sounds like love to me. And now she's gone.

I have experimented with other patterns and different brands, had cutoms made, the works. But now I know what works for me, and it sucks that I prob won't be able to get it again.

I'll have to call Randy again and see what's up. Maybe I can go through a different retailer to get these, but I doubt they will be able to get the same pro model that I had, and I'd be stuck with just another regular RM19. Let me know if you hear anything more from those guys about their account with Sherwood or their (Hat Trick's) move/closure/sale. I'll also call up Sherwood and work that end once I know exactly whom Hat Trick dealt with.

Thanks for getting me hooked, you bastard! :P

Heh, guess I'm lucky I keep trying new sticks instead of getting latched on to one. Maybe if I scored on a regular basis ;)

I'll head back out there sometime in the next couple weeks and let you know what I see. I've seen a couple Sherwoods over at Hockey Giant, and I'm not sure if they just bought the clearance or closeout stock (it was right around the time they disappeared from Hat Trick).

For some reason Hat Trick moved all the stuff from their Richfield store to the new Eagan store. When i was at the Eagan store i asked if the Richfield one was staying open and they said yes...no idea why they moved the stuff though. I did not really look at sticks though so I am not sure about the sherwood situation.

Hi guys

Hopefully not off topic.....

Anyone know how Easton's Heatly compares with Forsberg for lie? They are both listed as 5 but the Forsberg is too high.
