Do I have a high volume foot?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the tongue of my synergy skates is pushed much further out than the eyelets when laced up. Do I have a high volume foot, and could this be why I get such brutal lacebite in easton skates?

your foot looks somewhat similar to mine, and the only skate that i've tried that was deep enough for me was Graf 709s- one of the deepest pboots around.

I also have cankles that may be bigger than yours though, which only adds to my issue of needing a deep boot. I'd say go into an LHS and try on some of the notorious deep boots- nike flexlite, graf xx9 series, rbks, possibly a supreme (below the one90) and if you can find an 8090.

It looks like you have a pretty flat arch, but a high volume foot. RBK's are deep, I'm not sure how the arch is as mine is a mile high so I'm always poorly fitted in this area.

Refer to the pencil test ( which you sound as if you fail). After the boot is laced you should be able to place a pencil across the boot at the 3rd eyelet and it should touch both sides of the boot. If the boot fits you fine otherwise you could experiment with lacing. maybe skip an eyelet at the hottest spot, or just tie that section looser. If the pencil test is really far off you may want to get another skate. There are knowledgeable folks here that can help with that!

Add a much higher arch to your foot, and you've pretty much got the same depth as me. I recently tried a bunch of skate, and only 2 brands were deep enough, RBK and Graf. I probably could've gotten by with Bauer supremes, but they pinched a bit in the toe cap.

I ended up with Graf 727s, although 709s probably would've worked (I wanted the extra ankle flex).

I tried on one pair of Eastons (Synergy 1100) but my foot pratically exploded out the top. I had almost the same problem with my Tacks (which I bought before discovering this wonderful site).

You just lay a pencil across the 3rd eyelight from the top of the skates...if the pencil touches your foot the skates aren't deep enough. It's not that complicated.

Btw I failed the pencil test in my One90s, but they are the most comfortable skates I've worn and don't seem to give me any problems at all. What exactly are the negatives of having a skate too shallow besides lack of comfort?

If you're a weak skater you probably won't notice any difference, but if you're a strong skater you'll break down the boot faster. Instead of the boot flexing where it supposed to, your massive foot will cause it to flex in other spots, and the boot will start to lose integrity.

thats actually happening to the pair of stealth i owned. it seems to flex around the fourth to fifth eyelet and, the whole upper half seems to flex when i skate hard.

Well, I'm by no means a weak skater...I've only had them for couple weeks, so I've only got around 15-20 hours in them, and they definately aren't as stiff as they were out of the box, but they are by no means broken down. Is premature break down the only down side? My 8090s were tanks, so I was hoping they'd last just as long.

Which skate would be closest to the width of the synergy series- the flexlites or the graf xx9s? Both the RBKs and the Bauer supremes were too shallow for me, and I can't seem to find nikes or grafs anywhere but online.

Thanks!
