Painting a helmet

Recommended Posts

I have an old Jofa/Gretzky style helmet that was white in color. I painted it black, however, the paint on the ear loops will not stick as the loops bend and crack the paint. Any suggestions on a paint I could use to paint the ear loops? The ear loops on the helmet are rivoted on and do not appear to be easy to replace

Painting a helmet can lead to weakening of the plastic but with a gretzky style helmet this won't make much of a difference. Maybe try a black permanent marker no the ear loops. You can remove them fairly easy. Just drill out the back of the rivet and use a helmet screw to put them back no

You can try to first use an auto style primer, one designed for plastic that has more "flex agent" in the paint as opposed to stiffener. After you have a primer on there, you should be able to use a spray paint designed for plastic....once again with a high content of flex agent.

I jus take my time, use spray paint and stand about 3 ft away. Just give it dustings at a time. And slowly it comes together and i havent had a problem yet.

A search on painting helmets turned this up-Krylon Fusion sounds like the way to go?

Are you guys sanding the helmet first-what grit?

My son switched clubs, helmet still fits fine.

That was for an adult using an old Jofa brain bucket. Do NOT paint or dye your kids helmet. It will weaken the helmet and could potentially lead to serious head injury. Isn't your kid's brain worth the $50-$99 it will cost for a new helmet? It would also no longer be a certified helmet and he could be thrown out of any game where he tries to wear the helmet.

$50....that's a tough one ;)

Actually, didn't realize the paint would weaken the shell. Appreciate the advice, I was going to pull aproval sticker off with hair dryer and put it back on after painting. We'll go new if there's any question paint affects the helmets safety. I did hear some stickers adhesive might affect helmets.

What about the goalie masks that are airbrushed-some special paint?

USA Hockey says a painted helmet is illegal, as it does weaken the plastic. Goalie helmets are all leagal as they are not made of plastic.

Even if you put the sticker back on, it's not certified anymore. Goalie helmets are generally made of different materials and each painter usually provides proof that his products do not void the certification.

Advice: Don't do it, as it voids the certification.
