Well, to answer one question, the world will end when the sun explodes at the end of its life. Life could be wiped out before that via nuclear/biological warfare or an asteroid, but it'll take the sun to end the Earth. Thats taken the question rather literally, but its at least an answer :P

As far as the whole 2012 thing, I've also read that its not entirely literal in the sense that something catastrophic could happen, but it can be in the sense that one 'age' has ended, and another will begin, with humanitys conscience going to a higher level or something along those lines. Who knows what'll happen... we'll find out soon enough

If we're talking about the entire planet being "ended", then nuclear war won't destroy all life. But if we're talking about mankind, than a nuclear war will probably be what happens, until some crazy environmentalist goes all Rainbow 6 on us.

If you want to take the asteroid theory and run with it, here is the information on asteroids, taken from Death By Black Hole by Neil deGrasse Tyson (great reading btw):

Once Per Millenium Asteroid: 100m diameter, 50 Megatons of TNT, and 2,500 A-Bombs

Once Per 1,000,000 Year Asteroid: 2km diameter, 1,000,000 megatons of TNT, and a whopping 50,000,000 A-Bombs.

Once Per 1,000,000,000 Year Asteroid: 10km diameter, 100,000,000 megatons of TNT, and get this: 5,000,000,000 A-Bombs.

As for the asteroid I talked about earlier, here's what he said:

Not the end of the world, in literal terms, but that's insane!

they arent saying the world will end, just that there will be a MAJOR change

as for my beliefs, i dont think that the world will end, nor do i think the human race will be wiped out (at least i hope not) but i think its possible that there will be a change

The Mayans seemed to beleive that there will be a "new age". Called the Golden age. If thats the case I would think that the human race would get knocked out, and if that is true then I'd guess that animals dont stand much of a chance either. Especially with that big of a change. Even with us being on top of the food chain, a change that big has to do some sort of damage to other creatures and they would die off soon after.

Including cockroaches.

Oh come on, cockroaches are the pinnacle of evolution, if you subscribe to that theory. They can survive without a head or food for a month! They're not aesthetically pleasing so other creatures don't eat them. ;)

Guess you guys missed the my sarcasm. I through in the cockroaches line for kicks.

However we could go with the Jon Stewart theory - that cockroaches would die off soon after humans because cockroaches need warmth inside buildings and other places that humans make. So the cockroaches would have no human made buildings for warmth to resort to and eventually die off in a months time.

But Im not so sure we should be taking any end of the world theorys from the The Daily Show to seriously.
