Teams/players that sandbag

Recommended Posts

That is exactly what most of the high level inline hockey teams are donig now days. Have a squad that goes to most of the tournys but then when nationals rolls around the team finds a line of high rollers. Then the original squad goes to nationals to watch. Im not going to lie, both of my teams did that this season.

This is high level roller hockey though, not beer league. So you tell me if you think it is still acceptable or not.

Our team has lost several championship games in our league because of teams bringing in player to play in that game. The one team had 2 or 3 girls that were hell of hockey players, they sat them along with 3 other guys to bring in more college guys. Two of the girls sat on the bench, not in uniform, and the other guys were in the stands... how do you play an entire season then sit for the most important game...

I captain a beer league team and would never do that to any of my players. All of my guys play every situation. There are times when I might stack a line late if we need a goal but I would never make my guys sit like that. I'd rather lose.

Come to think of it, our league wouldn't allow it to happen anyways. ;)

Those of us who play for fun and aren't very good appreciate captains like you. I play every game for my team(s) and have played in three championship games "stolen" by sandbaggers. Beer league shouldn't be like that.

Depends on how many levels down they are playing and if its the whole team or just a few guys. The situation I brought up was a team that had obviously played high level hockey with a few guys that played college playing in an intermediate league.

That's BS. Why would you play all the qualifiers knowing that you might not get to play in nationals? Makes no sense at all to me.

BS or not, that's how it is. Reading this thread only confirms something that both inline and ice players see in ALL except the top level leagues: There are always people that truely don't belong in whatever league you are playing in. As alot of other people have said already in this thread, but how many times have you got to the playoffs, and the ringers really turn it on for their team to win? However unfair it is, it seems that how most of the teams win those divisions.

At a local rink down where i live, they use the Pointstreak system for keeping track of all players stats online and etc. They use a formula at the end of the season to determine weither they are supposed to move up or not. (i should say, THEY SAY they do this. I don't believe it for a minute.)

As for nationals, the few teams from my rink do the same, they qualify with as many people as possible, but when nationals come, it's time to roll with the best players available. Again, not entirely fair, but it is the game.

We had a team in our D league who was at least a B. Ran the table and captured the winter crown. Teams were frustrated with them and it lead to sticks to the face every game. They later moved up to B's where they went .500.

what does sandbag mean lol i know... im ready to be flamed

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sandbagging

When a player in any game chooses (on purpose) to not play their best. Normally this is because they are too superior, they want to hustle you, or they are too lazy to play their best with nothing on the line.

I just beat him the first two games. Should I money match him?

Nah, he was sandbagging.

btw, everytime i see you post, that "scatman" song starts playing in my head. i hate it.

I prefer this version:

"When a woman rests her naked brests upon someone else's forehead. "

"Danielle was so drunk that she went around sandbagging people all night!

Jill was the first to pass out, so we all took turns sandbagging her."

Yeah, I captain my team also and I have a few guys that maybe aren't quite on par with the level of play, but I play them on a regular shift. Sure, they might sit on the PP or the PK, but they play and I would never, ever think of benching them. In fact, one guy on the team says he has a guy that would be unstoppable and wants him on the team, but to be honest I'd rather win through hard work.

Yeah, well the rink we play at has a lot of issues.

you know, for awhile, i was an advocate that the mercy rule shouldn't be enforced because you lose game time. Now that i see this, i totally change my mind on that topic.

Goal 10 seconds in? shots were 39-6? talk about sandbagging...

Now THAT is ridiculous. That is the way that frustrations are taken out in the form of fights and irrational penalties.....especially seeing 4 unsportsmanlike's called (one being a 10 min major), and numberous high sticks. That team/league needs to be restructured.

What about sandbaggers that have no other league or level to play at? Our current senior league has 2 or 3 players that basically carry their 2 teams every week, but these guys have no where else to go in our area. It's kind of frustrating for the other teams *and* for these talented guys, I'd guess.

Playing down a level is fine if you're out there helping the game along and distributing the puck. It's a service to newer/less skilled players.

Playing down a level and hotshotting 5-7 goals in a game? You're a discredit to the game..

As far as playing up a level?

I'm in the bottom third skill-wise in my league. It's probably helped me alot. It didn't take me long to realiz that I'd never be able to dangle or create much offense against the good players, so I resigned myself to skating better then finding smaller battles to win.

For instance - if the puck comes to my wing - It's going out of the zone, even if the ex-pro D-man is there.

That ex-college D that usually gets 2-3 goals per game? If he's on my side of the ice, he's not even getting a shot.

I can't skate fast with the puck, but as long as I've got pretty fresh legs, I can backcheck in a straight line as fast as the best players can dangle. By the time we get back to my D-zone, I'm there to at least take away a couple of options.

Hopefully I'll get to the point where I touch the puck some more, but until then, I'm having a blast keeping up with the good players...

every league has these guys

i play in D league.. my summer league had a guy who played in the OHL and QMJ.

he was carrying his team.. 4-5 goals a night.... and he was taking it easy...

luckily the league (ASHL) has rules that OHL players can play at D level, but not in the play offs.. so we protested until he was ruled ineligible for the playoffs.. they lost the first round with out their star.

same thing again this winter.. guy from NCAA, lighting everyone up for 4-5 goals a night.. let the protesting begin...
