attn: americans.. helping an euro dude in the states

Recommended Posts

yo im planning some kind of vacation in the states, tho i dont know where i should go. ive been in the usa for like 5 times, nevertheless i was a kid and now i just wanna go there again. when the flights are booked early enough, they arent expensive as hell. so thats why im starting to plan this stuff right now.

im an uberhockeynerd, so id love to see some nhl, ahl and college games, shop for equipment and do/see everthing whats related to hockey.

related to this one above, id also like to take a ride to canada.. maybe toronto. french canada is not my cup of tea cause i dont speak french at all.

so which cities would be in the mix?

there are boston (+providence), new york (+syracause), maine and probably detroit in my mind. i dont know where i will stay (prolly some eff'd up hotel or youth hostel) but i think thats not that important right now.. that can be worked out when its in the near future.

thanks a lot.

Between the Red Wings, Perani's, Ford, Dearborn, and everything else in the area that is just iconic american culture.....Detroit and the surrounding area would be a good place to have on your list. Personally speaking though.....you simply can't beat taking the subway to Penn Station and going up a few floors to Madison Square Garden for a Rangers game!!

:P

Well NY, Boston, Detroit got enough hockey for me, thats awesome. NHL, AHL and College teams all over the place. Id also be in for some Scrimmages but i cant get my gear overseas ;)

How is the connection between NY-BOS-MAINE? I wont have a car, i guess. Im 22, but afaik, you have to be around 23 to rent a car.

I actually believe it is 25 to rent a car.....but beyond that, the trains will run between all of those major cities, and the train is a pretty cool way to see some parts of the country anyway.

Don't overlook Minnesota--the self proclaimed state of hockey. You can't beat a Wild game at the Xcel center (SI once called it the greatest venue for any sport in the United States) or a University of Minnesota Gophers game at Mariucci arena (I actually prefer these to Wild games).

Flying to Detroit to go to Perani's is just absolutely funny. I take it you've never been to one. Greatest story yesterday - guy comes in with white 5k Pump skates...saying his kid can't skate. Bought them at Perani's the day before. Now, my original thought was that they weren't sharpened...but noooo....they threw me for a loop! They crossground one!

Hell, if Perani's is on your list, I'm iconic American culture.

However, totally agree with the Penn Station...

I currently live in Asheville NC....so I haven't seen a hockey shop since I left NJ 3 years ago. The two Perani's that I went to up in Michigan had good selections of materials, but I can't say anything about their skate sharpening. Crossgrinding a skate like that is a pretty bonehead move though. OUCH!!!

Yep, one CG'd skate, the other untouched. And then the guy started to make excuses for them. "They were busy, they were selling a lot of skates."

Are you KIDDING ME?

boston has the bruins, alot of great college teams like BC/BU, there's alot of purehockey stores around there which are good for equipment, and the providence bruins AHL team is really close. toronto is almost 9 hours away though.

Haha, okay. I googled all day long and im down with Boston/NY/Maine. All three are fine with me. Maybe i can hang out with Marco Sturm when im in Boston, haha... j/k. As i said before, all those cities are cool. NY might be the most expensive one, but it wont kill me. Maine is one of the most scenic and breath-taking areas (short of the pacific northwest) in the fall, afaik. Guess depends which flight is cheaper.

If you do want to do Toronto, and other cities in the North East, I would definitely take a train from NYC to Buffalo or even get a cheap commuter plane ticket. Buffalo is 10 minutes from Ontario, and only 1.5 hours from Toronto. It's cheap to stay there, and Sabres games are definitely fun to check out. Buffalo is also only 15 minutes from Niagara Falls, which is awesome if you have never seen it. Detroit and Minnesota are both good choices, but are definitely quite a ways outside of Toronto.

Bostons a nice place to visit, we went 2 years ago and they were giving thermals away to people at the airport because it was - rediculous degrees, I remember we brought some water down from the minibar at our hotel (Mmmmmm, minibar water) before we went out to visit some place with friends and when I reached in to my subtly touristy backpack it was frozen solid maybe thats not anything special to some but for me it was like recieving my first Gi Joe as a kid, exitement mixed with bitter dissapointment, make sure you get a picture at Cheers aswell and you can't go wrong.

Toronto sucks. Gretzky's is barely a half decent restaurant and the HHoF is in a damn mall. Thats it.

There are hundreds of other great restaurants in Toronto and at least as many fantastic bars. The entrance to the HHoF is odd, but the trophy room is what the hall is all about. I've been there a number of times and there is still a "special" feeling when you walk up the steps and into the room.

Some non-hockey stuff to do if you go to Boston:

Guiness at the Black Rose

Chowder at Quincey Market

Dinner at Legal Seafood

Maine is nice but there's not that much to do there, or at least i've never really found anything to do when i go except the beach... there's not that much hockey in maine either.. there's UMaine and the Lewiston Maineiacs but there's absolutely nothing in the Lewiston area. there's also the Portland Pirates AHL but Maine is pretty big and these are all spread out. I'd suggest Boston or NYC.

i live 1 1/2 hours west of boston and it takes me about 3 hours to get to NYC by car, mapquest says 3 hours 56 from boston to NYC so i guess that's about what a bus would take.. no clue about a train though.
