Different size skate for left and right foot

Recommended Posts

Due to some issues my son has with his feet, we are having a custom brace made for him to stabalize his right ankle. Therefore, he is going up a full size in his skates for his right foot to acomodate the brace.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

He currently has a pair of youth CCM Vector 10.0's so we are thinking of just buying another pair in the larger size and hopefully that will be OK.

Do skate makers have some kind of provision for people with birth defects?

Another question is regarding blade holder and the blade.

The blade is longer on the larger size skate than the one he currently has.

Is the holder the same height?

Can the longer blade be profiled to match the shorter blade somewhat?

Medically I don't suffer from a birth defect, but the size difference between my left and right feet are huge. A full shoe size between the two means getting a tailored or "right fitting" skate is difficult.

Im sure if you speak to a LHS rep and see if he/she can contact CCM to see if such an option in your case is available. From a business point of view it would be a great PR excercise not to mention a good old fashioned; great customer experience.

I contacted CCM customer service and they are going to see if they can send me a skate for my son no charge!

They are searching for my son's size!

CCM has a customer for life!

Just yesterday I sold a pair of 5k Pumps to a customer of mine whose son has a club foot. We went 5 on the regular and 3 on the smaller foot.

He had to buy two pair of skates.

Today, what I ended up doing for him was reprofiling both skates, and moving the balance point of the small foot to match the bigger foot. Another option would to put a bigger holder on the skate, and shaving it to fit, but it's hard to do with two sizes difference.

However, what I have to do for him next is to take the small skate and shim it up to about 1/4" all around to match the holder height of the bigger boot. Unfortunately, they threw away my shim material during the fire cleanup, so I have to reorder it.

I have heard that about Nordstoms......Thankfully though the reason we need the larger size skate is to accomodate the brace my son will be wearing on his right foot.

Thanks for the tip on shimming the holder JR!

I will talk to my guy at Total Hockey and see if my son's skates will need that done.

BTW I go to a brick and mortar Total Hockey here in Downers Grove, Illinois.

I support my LHS 100%

We have bought pretty much all of our stuff from them...a few things from PIAS. Nothing from the net.

I don't think that they custom make youth skates. At least youth skates are comparatively inexpensive.

Keyword being comparatively.....My son needs a very stiff and wide boot to compensate for his weak ankles and flat foot, so he is in a CCM Vector 10.0...basically the only choice we had. $149.00 in youth sizes. Figure a new pair every year (maybe two) and it adds up quickly.
