Composite shafts use for Roller compared to Ice

Recommended Posts

I've just started to play for my college's Roller hockey team in the NCRHA and am looking to purchase a new shaft for the season.

Should the fact that inline pucks are a good bit lighter than ice pucks have a factor in my decision on which shaft to purchase?

I currently am using a Synergy II shaft and blade and a Z-Bubble w/ a ST blade and I don't really like the feel of them with inline pucks so far. They are both 85 flex and I am about 180 lbs but for some reason they don't feel whippy enough when I shoot.

Should I try and go for a flexier stick than I would use in ice since the puck is that much lighter?

Can anybody recommend a good shaft for roller hockey?

Since an inline puck weighs less than a regular puck the stick will flex LESS when you are loading up your shot. Using an intermediate flex (70) instead of that 85 will probably add a bit more zip to your wrist shots.

I am having trouble finding a shaft with a flex that low.

I was interest in the XXX shaft but the lowest it comes in is a 77 flex, and I am sure I will need to cut it down to match my height which will most likely end up making it a 90 or something.

As far as shafts for inline play; everyone I talk to, as well as my own personal experience, seem to agree that there is no advantage between tapered and standard shafts. One90s go down to a 77 flex. Easton (as well as most of the other manufacturers go to 85.

How short are you that you need to cut a shaft? I'm only 5'7 and I still use a plug in my Ultra Lite to bring it up to my nose.

I'm in roughly the same situation as you. I felt I needed a whippier flex than my 85 flex Easton SE. There are other options besides the 77 flex of NBH sticks. TPS has a Whip flex that I find quite better. Warrior also has a 75 flex.

I am about 5'11. I bought the One90 shaft earlier in the year online from inline warehouse and had them put a One90 blade on it and ship it to me already together...I had to cut a good few inches off of it and the flex went up by nearly 20.

The NBH shafts are 54 inches long.

Is the warrior 75 flex whippier than a NBH 77 flex? I was also interested in the AK 27.

Which TPS shaft would you recommend for roller?

TPS XN10 or Redlight XN10 are quality shafts that I've tried. I just bought R2 Armour and it looks pretty promising. I also hear the R8 lite is a good one too.

I like the xn10 shafts. If you can find one, an R2XN10 is amazing. If you want something that isn't tapered, go with a redlite xn10. I have been using a redlite for about 2 seasons. I love it.

go with an intermediate flex. I'm 6ft tall and about 210lbs. I use an easton zbubble intermediate shaft with flex 75.

I dont like stiff flexes, as I dont use a lot of slapshots, mainly snappers and wristers.

My Z-Bubble 85 flex feels a lot flexier to me than my Synergy II 85 for some reason.

I havn't been able to locate any Easton shaft flexier than 85, I can't find any whip TPS shafts, I can't find any Warrior shaft flexier than 85...I am going insane!

There's plenty of online retailers with whip shafts.

You're not looking hard and/or online. Warrior has Dolos at 70 (int) and 75 (sr).

I've looked at inlinewarehouse, epuck, hockey giant, hockey monkey...those are the only ones I know about...

Which sites would you recommend?

Out of the ones you mentioned, I'd only deal with inline/icewarehouse and maybe epuck. Inline/Ice is the one I'd stand by though.

Also, check out the Int. One90 shaft because it's 67 flex, though presumably longer than normal int. shafts.

Icewarehouse has the Dolos with Nipple Grips in that flex range, but if you want to go with standard blades (and cheaper) I'd go with the One90.

Is the flex number the only difference between and senior and an intermediate shaft?

I see that the intermediate One90 shaft is only 1 inch shorter than the senior Z-Bubble, Ultra Lite. Are they the same diameter?

Check out Hockey World. They have a Franklin 850 shaft that I've been using for roller hockey. I know the name sucks, but the shaft is awesome and the price is right.

I've also used the Easton UltraLite, Z-Bubble(original), TPS Rubber, Red Light and Tri-Core (don't think any of those are made anymore) and even an old hespeler shaft (can't remember the number). I think I liked my old Ultra Light the best, but this Franklin shaft is a close second.

As for flex, I've seen people go both ways. I tend to think that a slightly more flexible stick is better for inline, but I've seen some of the best shots in the league from guys using a 110 Easton that might only weigh 140 lbs. That whip flex from TPS feels like a wet noodle in my hands though, I'd stay away from it unless you like a lot of flex.

<updated>

Damn, I just looked at Hockey Monkey and they have the old Easton Synthesis Grip shafts (Int) for 2 for $90. Finding a tapered blade would be harder, but that's a hell of a good deal if you don't mind the grip coating.

I always thought the lighter guys we're making a bad decision because of that, but just this last season i got my hands on a Synergy SE 110 Iginla, and it's probably the hardest shot i've ever had. I'm 6ft, 160, and had been using 100 flex's forever. (tried an 85, and forget it, i can't control that thing at all.)

I had bought a one90 shaft 85 flex and paired with the one90 blade it was too long for me, had to cut it down to about a 105 flex. I used it one time and all my slap shots were knucklers the would fly wildly...my wrister on the other hand didn't seem affected much...does that make sense?

Isn't a flexy stick supposed to make for better wristers, thus my stick having a flex too high should make my wrist shot stink?

Composite sticks/shafts are so confusing to me...

I'm the opposite. 5'8", 160 ish?

I've never had a good slap shot, but my wrist shot is much better with a stiffer shaft
