"Many players who use composite sticks tuck pieces of wood into the hollow shaft, their subtle nod to the past."

WTH? Tuck wood into the shaft to pay homage? Not to alter the flex, dampen vibration, balance the weight....

seems like the writer made a few assumptions, but good article nevertheless.

A wood plug cut flat into a shaft does(in my opinion) have benefits, none include a "subtle nod to the past" but dampening and balance... Mainly dampening. The same feeling can come from a pastic plug in the end, It keeps the shaft from feeling hollow, especially when you take a hard pass.

If the player wants to raise the flex, they'll cut the shaft and extend it back to length. The end adds moment torque but it won't flex making the overall flex raise slightly in force and release and lower slightly in kick point. Sticks only come in certain flex increments, to pinpoint a certain force tweaking is required.

Once they have a certain setup that the love they won't change it for the world and they won't trust the manufacturer to match it. That's one reason why players will still use wood extensions or will refuse to change sticks.

Some aren't picky at all and will use whatever's given to them, taking time to alter it and get it suitable isn't that important. I've seen some players using retail sticks, but that might be due to a lack of their own or coincidence that the retail specs match their setup.
