ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 So here's the deal. I'm thinking of picking up one of those plastic sheets of fake ice to shoot pucks off of in my backyard.Problem: I need something to shoot at, my net won't cut it, it'll be destroyed inside of 5 minutes.Proposed solution: I'm thinking of building something out of wood maybe 6x4 or something to act as a target/backboard.Reality: Let's face it, handyman/carpenter I am not. What kinda wood should i be using? is wood even a good idea? If wood is alright, what sort of bracing/standup should I make for it?Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.Thanks. shifter 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 a big flat wood rectangle, and make holes in them so you can aim pass it?
GoHawks 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 just realize, if you are going to use a wood backdrop, noise will be an issue. Don't know what your neighbor situation is like, but shooting slapshots at a piece of plywood is going to be LOUD. If that's an issue, you could try to find an old mattress, and tape lines for a goal/targets onto it. That would be a lot quieter, and up close you might be able to work on rebounds. You said your net won't cut it... If you have a goal, you could probably buy a replacement net cheaper than building something out of wood, if you don't have materials laying around... Just my thoughts, good luck!
Krev 86 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 Go to a golf driving range in the middle of the night and take a chunk of netting out of their barriers. :P
Archangel#16 1 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 what I did was take a piece of plywood and spray painted a couple of spots on it as targets. I found this easier than holes because it isnt as much work and you dont need to scoop all the pucks out after you take shots. They just bounce off and down to the ground
ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 Yeah i think noise would be somewhat of an issue...is there anything i can do if i do use wood to dampen the noise?
Krev 86 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 Take some old pillows and tape them in front of the piece of wood? Might be a bit thin, but you could always put stuff inside the pillow case.
bpmd210 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 Weather is also an issue with wood. How about a sturdy metal net with real neeting? My son and I use one and it stands up to repeated heavy shooting. nothing like the metallic clank of a post.
chk hrd 164 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 go to the hardware store and get yourself a nice heavy canvas tarp and hang it a few feet from the wall. It's pretty much the same as the ones they sale for garage doors
pisani34 10 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 i picked up a few poly tarps from crappy tire for like $3 or 4 dollars for a 9'x12' sheet. i havent used them yet, but are the poly tarps too weak to handle pucks? it says on the package that its stronger than a canvas one....... chk hrd 164 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 they probably won't last to long, especially if it gets very cold. Try using two together and give it a go, what do you have to loose $6.00.
pisani34 10 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 yeah ill give it a go when im not too lazy to set it up, and i can get a net/target to shoot at. It also says on the packaging its guarenteed against cracking/rippage at all types of temperatures too, and its hovering around 4 or 5C everday here now, so we'll see how it holds up
