Few Qs

Recommended Posts

Need to upgrade my gear and I need some new pads and some info on sticks.

I have an brand new easton ultra lite shaft sitting in my closet I may or may not keep, and a synery II on the way. Need some recommendations for blades for those, I'm a lefty and used to always buy woodsticks with the most severe curve they had for more lift on the puck and need something more moderate.

My shins, I'm using some cheap pair I picked up off ebay and want something in the $40-50 range, also need some elbows. Thought about picking up a set like this from hockeymonkey.com

I know its not top of the line but will it do for a pretty much beginner? Which set would be best or should I mix and match?

I've got skates covered, have some Mission Fuel 100AGs on the way as well so that obstacle is done with.

Any info is appreciated, not trying to break the bank here because I'm no pro by any means.

I recommend the Easton package. The 300 shin is very durable (currently use), and the shoulder pads provide good protection.

for protective, try alot of stuff on. most everything out there is more than protective enough for a beginner, but different brands fit differently. currently i am wearing bauer shins, gloves, and lid, ccm elbows, and easton pants. just gotta try everything on until you figure out what is most comfortable to you. as far as the blades go, you could always buy some wood blades and shape them yourself. other than that a few of the more "moderate" curves i have used are the nike p88 and pm9, and the easton forsberg and iginla. and if you decide you want a hell of a hooker for some fun, you could always grab some coffey curves.... :o

Try stuff on at your LHS......I bought shin pads off the internet and ended up with water on the kneecap, just from them not fitting right. Going to the LHs and making sure my knee would be in the donut with my skates on made all the difference.

As far as quality- if you are in a no hit league then a good elbow cap with softer, more mobile biceps should be ok on the elbows. Shins- buy the most protective you find comfortable....you're still gonna be taking sticks and pucks to the shins all the time- no matter what your level.

Your post is a tough read, that would explain a lot of it.

Blades - without some idea of what lie or curve you're looking to get I can only say get a wood blade.

Shins - Giant has a great deal on older model Itechs. I love my 660s your mileage may differ.

Make sure you try on whatever shins and elbows you do decide to get. I'm really picky about elbows and nothing seems to fit as well as I'd like.

For blades, try an Iginla or P88. Good mid curve without being a huge hook. If you can find a Montreal M95 Euro, that's my favorite wood blade. It has a strip of ABS on the bottom to prevent wear, it's pretty light weight, and it's a moderate mid-toe curve. I found Bauer wood blades break down very easily. I like the Synergy blades, both wood and composite.

Everything else, I'd try on first.

thanks fellas, my lhs just doesn't carry much of anything so its difficult to try stuff on.
