What to the pens need to do?

Recommended Posts

Maybe this is a little early but what do the Pens need to do to win?! This is the second straight game that they've coughed up a two goal lead to lose. Fleury didnt play bad, but he didn't play good either. The second goal the Islanders scored tonight was one of the worst defensive lapses I've seen thus far this year, both guys in the two on one completely and utterly focused on the puck carrier and never even glanced at the weak side man.

I honestly think they need to sit Fleury until he finds his game and trade someone like Staal, Recchi, or Malone for a good defensive prospect. I'm tired of watching Sydor pump slapshots into defenders standing right in front of him.

The Pens got a PP goal tonight but even still it was a semi-flukey goal and the PP looked weak all night long in my opinion.

I know they are .500 , but a team this offensively gifted should be scoring more than 2 goals per game, and they should have a defense that can hold when they get a lead..

This normally happens to teams with players considered "the best" in their sport. Alot of the team just sort of sit around and waits for the goals to score themselves. The pens, along with the sharks, will be fine, you guys should start worrying after xmas.

I understand that, but you just have to give them time out of the gate. I wouldnt worry much if I were a pens fan, their team is gushing with offensive talent, when teams are hurting after the break, the Pens have the sort of depth to ride and finish out plenty fine.

Defense Defense Defense. They need more stay at home d-men. The team is overall a very good team but as far as I know they don't have solid d-men to play against a teams 1st line.

For example (I'm a Sens fan so sue me) they don't have a Philips-Volchenov pairing. One that isn't going to score a lot of goals but are willing to play tough and block shots.

The Pens need this. I think that they will squeak into the playoffs. Truly and sincerely, good luck with your team.

they have quite a few problems but i think the biggest is that crosby - malkin are the only ones getting points right now

christensen - 1 goal

recchi - 1 goal

staal - 1 goal

roberts - 1 goal

armstrong - 1 goal

ruutu - 0 goals

alot of these guys consistently got points last year and right now they are lucky if they even get an assist much less a goal.

They need to stop creating turn-overs at their blue line and in the central zone. They give too many turn-overs for 3 on 1 or 3 on 2. Then, Fleury looks bad because he's facing too many odd man rushes.

I just saw the NYI vs Pens recap and there's at least 10 turn-overs around their own blue line.

They need to put the puck in the net, it's that simple. The defense isn't stellar but is hardly the reason they are losing. Fleury has given up some bad goals, and Sabourin isn't the answer. You don't win in the NHL with one line scoring.

It's a bit early, there's probably 25 teams that are unhappy with how things have gone so far. Seems hasty to want to trade Staal when he's just starting his 2nd season (nevermind most guys from his draft class haven't made their NHL squads yet).

Don't think too many teams would dump a good defensive prospect for somebody Recchi's age (then again, you guys did trade Noah Welch for Gary Roberts last season). And Malone doesn't have a ton of value....I'd imagine the guy you'd get back wouldn't be much of an upgrade (if at all) over Sydor.

Pens Fans, let me preface this post by saying I come in peace...

Having said that, I want to hear from REAL Pens fans on Sid's antics.

I was watching the Pens/Flyers game last night, and Sid seems to do a ridiculous amount of carping to the refs and has a real knack for the dramatic. Toward the end of the game, Jason Smith caught Sid on the wrist, and Sid flops to the ice and rolls around and loses his helmet and acts like he was shot. I thought it was a little overboard to say the least.

I wonder what the vets on the team think about Sid's antics? Does he really deserve the C at this point in his career? Roberts, Rex, Gonch have been around for a LONG time and have played with some of the greats of the game. I just couldn't help but wonder what they think of him.

Sidney, while ridiculously talented, still seems very immature and emotionally out of control.

Your thoughts?

The defense is bad, forcing the forwards to come back farther into the zone to help out. Because those guys are expending so much effort in their own zone, they don't have as much to give at the other end. It's very hard to be great in all three zones all game long. You often have to cheat one way or the other a bit.

Oh my God, how can you possibly say something like that about the best player in the NHL? Pointing out his flaws, are you serious?

IDK, it looked like a pretty good chop in my opinion, he wears his helmet ridiculously loose so I don't really care that his lid came off.

I think he acts wrong sometimes, but he's much better than he has been in years past at yelling at the refs. Give him another year or two and I think it'll be fine.

As far as the C goes.. Roberts and Recchi are basically non-existent this year and I wouldn't care if they got rid of either of them. Gonchar may be a good choice cause he still has a few years left on his contract and I'd hope they wouldn't get rid of the leading defensive scorer, but if the right offer came along for a great stay at home D man for Gonch, maybe they would get rid of him since they have Whitney and so much firepower up front.

To me Sid is the logical choice. Its a matter of time till 2 of 3 vets are gone. I don't see Rex or Roberts back in a Pens sweater next season (or any sweater for that matter).
