St. Paul new Hockeytown USA?

Recommended Posts

I was reading an article about how excited crosby was to play in minnesota because it had become the "State of Hockey." he went on about it for a bit and i was surprised to hear that a state i only knew b/c coach bombay came from ther was being put on the map by solid defence and crosby's compliments. then all of a sudden a celebrity guest speaker today ( as far as political scientists go ) in my uni poli sci class brought up a town in minnesota that bob dylan was from ( RE: American industry speach) - i think they got steel there or something. Minnesota has been getting alot of press up here lately

ps, love the dark jerseys and i should add that my very first minor hockey select team had the kelly green and yellow colours after the northstars and i loved them. (we even had white shoulder patches and gold stars down the sleeves like CLB's jerseys) needless to say i was pissed when we had to switch to dallas colours cause the northstars was deemed outdated...i then switched leagues to one that had tampa colours so it didnt get better

Well hockey's pretty huge here...but I prefer the "state of hockey" more than Hockeytown USA. Mainly because it's so big in the Twin Cities, so it's more than just St Paul, although I guess that's semantics.

"State of Hockey" has a better ring to it.

For a small town, Warroad has some nice ice facilities..Is the Christian stick factory still there?

I'm from Michigan. I'm a Wings fan. That said, it goes without saying that I know who the Illich family is.

When I played little league hockey, it was sponsored by Little Ceasar's Pizza.

Hockeytown will forever be Detroit. The Illich family created the tagline and I believe that with EVERYTHING that they've done, for the Red Wings, for Detroit, for College hockey, for Michigan's youth hockey and for thier employees, everyone should leave the "hockeytown" statement alone.

Create your own slogan... I think we're all sick of seeing the same old refurbished "Got Milk?" puns aren't we?

I think several towns, especially places like Warroad MN had claimed that moniker before St Paul or Detroit did.

No honorable mention of Madison, WI in the guys article?

Granted Wisconsin doesn't have a pro team, but UW won both Mens and Womens NCAA Championships last year.

That was 2 seasons ago and it takes a lot more than having 2 local university teams winning the NCAA title to claim that moniker. I'm guessing Warroad, MN alone with a population of 2000+ or so has churned out more NCAA hockey players than Madison, not to mention Olympians.

And apparently Minnesota puts out more jerks who don't know what they're talking about as well.

Lets look at some statistics since that's what the real world relies on for factual data and winning arguments over disputed subjects.

This info is from Wikepedia.

NCAA championships University of Wisconsin Madison: 6 mens 2 womens

NCAA championships University of Minnesota, Twin Cities: 5 mens 2 womens

NCAA championships University of Minnesota Duluth: 0 Mens 3 Womens

NCAA championships Minnesota State University Mankato: 0 Mens 0 Womens

So if we combine all the Minnesota college hockey teams they still have fewer men’s NCAA hockey championships than UW-Madison and 3 more women’s. (IF we combine all of Minnesota's victories) Michigan schools still rock both our shit with 16 total men’s championships, but they're the ones with the moniker you want. I just wanted an honorable mention.

Chris Chelios, Dany Heatley, Brian Rafalski, Rene Bourque, Curtis Joseph, and Steve Reinprecht (to name a few) have all played hockey for UW-Madison.

College hockey is irrelevant on the US sporting landscape.

One could argue the same about professional hockey.

Funny thing about the names you've mentioned is that none of them are from Wisconsin. Whereas the Badgers are the only Div I NCAA hockey school in the state, unlike Minnesota which fields teams like UMN, St Cloud State, Minnesota State, Bemidji State, UM-Duluth and so on. As for the MN/Wisconsin rivalry, I'm pretty sure the Gophers hold a large edge in the W-L column and as for championships, the current format of the NCAA tourney with its single elimination scheme makes the argument worthless. Michigan State won it last year and they were not exactly a "deep" team compared to North Dakota, Boston College or Minnesota. As for college hockey not being relevant, it certainly has produced a growing number of stars and higher 1st round picks than ever before. NCAA hockey is definitely a step up from Junior A and the CHA and the majority of the best American players go the college route these days. Jonathan Toews, Erik Johnson, Jack Johnson are all recent high picks that played college briefly and went straight to the NHL. The hockey landscape is changing and many NHL teams would prefer to develop some of their players on someone else's dime in NCAA hockey.
