Roenick gets 500

Recommended Posts

Good for him. I've always liked him, he's always good for a laugh. Now he can retire in peace (except for not having a cup).

Sportscenter had this in their "news and notes"- no replay or commentary. What a joke.

I am glad to see him get 500. He has been great at trying to promote the game in the U.S.

I quit watching Sportscenter five years ago. When they did cover hockey highlights, they would always try to discredit it as a sport. They have done more harm to the sport in the U.S. than anyone else. Truly a stupid move when you have the contract for the sport.

Good for JR .I was watching the game,Crazy goal. The sport needs more personalities like him, passionate about the sport ,a competitor and fun to watch ( and listen to )I like how he went out of his way to thank the Sharks organisation for giving him the chance to reach this milestone,Classy move on his part. :)

It was an unfortunate way to reach a milestone, but, a goal is a goal all the same. Always have been a big Roenick fan, have to respect the way he stands up for what he believes in, and makes it known how he feels on subjects regardless of what the norm in the NHL is.

Nice to see a guy get his 500th but too bad the milestone of 500 isn't what it used to be and it only took him 19 seasons to get there. But good job, now if sharks win the cup he can retire in peace.

I agree completly, he's grown on me too, and, like this, shows that he has class, unlike chelios who doesnt't shake the other team's hands after a playoff series, if the red wings lose.

Did he and his child actually skate around during the stop in the game, or afterwards?

Always have liked JR, glad to see he got it. Hope he doesnt get released now :-p

He skated around with his son on his back after the game, when he was announced as first star.

It has been a lot of fun watching him play in San Jose.

Class player. Enough said.

Roenick comes out swinging at golf outing

By ED MORAN

Speaking his mind never has been a problem for Jeremy Roenick.

And given a chance to field a few questions on the status of the ongoing contract negotiations between the players union and the NHL, the Flyers' star center did just that at a charity golf tournament in Presto, Pa., hosted by Pittsburgh Penguins owner-player Mario Lemieux during the weekend.

In speaking to the media, Roenick criticized the players union for not taking the deal the NHL offered in February and for ignoring the voice of a few players who stressed that the offer was better than the contract they are close to signing.

"The deal in February beats the [bleep] out of the deal we're gonna sign in July," Roenick said.

But Roenick tends to get more attention when he speaks out, particularly when he expresses his feelings about the reputation of the game and the players in the wake of the lost season, and his thoughts on the fans.

"Unfortunately, we had to go through a whole year to realize all the [bleep] that was going on throughout the whole year and not realize we just had to get a game on the ice,'' he said. "And we've hurt our league, we've hurt the reputation of our league and we've hurt the integrity of our league by sticking up for something that might not have been the right thing to do."

Later in the interview, Roenick said, "If people are going to sit and chastise professional athletes for making a lot of money and being [brown-nosers] and being spoiled and being cocky - they need to look at one thing and that's to look at the deal that we are probably going to end up signing in the next 3 weeks.

"And they better understand that pro athletes are not cocky. Pro athletes care about the game... Everybody out there who calls us spoiled because we play a game - they can all kiss my ass. They can all kiss my ass.''

It would be best not to call the players spoiled around Roenick.

"I will say personally, personally, to everybody who calls us spoiled, you guys are just jealous, and screw you guys, because we have tried so hard to try to get this game back on the ice... We are trying to get this game back on the ice to make it better for the fans. And if you don't realize that, then don't come. We don't want you in the rink, we don't want you in the stadium, we don't want you to watch hockey. Period."

That's J.R. hockey!

Do you know the real reason why he didn't shake hands? He did shake hands with the coaching staff, if I recall....

The guy is more than just a workhorse on the ice, he hasn't had a break, is leading the NHLPA Saskin outing... not to mention during this whole time the murders in his Detroit based restaurant... He just didn't have time to deal with the emotions.

True but shaking hands after a playoff series is on of the oldest traditons in the nhl and for someone to not do it, even if he did shake hands with the coaches, is totally classless.
