hooking under 'new' rules

Recommended Posts

When the new USA hockey rules came out (along with the new NHL rules), our rinks and refs put forth a lot of effort to explain the new rules and train refs. It seems the first month or so, hooking was called really tight. After that, it was relaxed and now I cant even tell a difference between the way hooking was called before the new rules and now. They seriosly allow way more hooking in my amateur adult leagues than in the NHL. This is true among all the rinks i've played at around the Dallas/Fort Worth area and in the Las Vegas tournament I went to last spring (played two different rinks). Its a generic problem and not just specific refs. This bothers me because its a penalty and also because i'm more of a finesse player than a grinder. Obviously hooking benefits the grinder.

Have you guys (and gals) noticed this also in your region or is it just a Dallas thing?

Man up and skate through it.

its not a matter of just skating through it. if it doesn't affect the play, then the hook doesn't bother me. what bothers me is that consistently hooks are used to disrupt plays and it goes uncalled. i don't care how manly you are, i could hook you and disrupt your intentions.

i'm just wondering if anyone else noticed this around your area outside of dfw. ive talked to many people here and they agree with me.

i'm a small guy, and getting hooked pisses me off to no end, but there aint shit you can do about it. i wish they went back to the standard they implemented... but both usa hoceky and the nhl have relaxed big time.

I wish they went back to the old way around here. Hooking was the best part of my defensive game. I was the master of the small tug in the right spot at the right time without it being a blatant hook.

Now, I have gotten a hooking penalty when I was falling down and my stick came up to parallel while I was trying to keep my balance. The stick never came within a foot of the opposing player, but I still got called for hooking.

I guess my fat lazy ass will have to skate and backcheck now instead of just waterskiing behind the attacking player.

haha! at first i thought they were going crazy with the calls. i remember getting called for popping a guys stick up and taking the puck because i "didnt play the puck". but now i don't see any difference between now and before the new rules. i don't think hooking should be allowed at all. it does nothing for the game other than slowing down. hooking also rewards lower skill players. i mean, you only hook a guy when hes already beat you positionally.

Seriously? Refs doing adult league games aren't going to call it like they are supposed to in real games. Go out, skate, have fun, and go home.

exactly...those refs just want to go home. if they keep stopping the clock to put someone in the box, they'll never finish the game.

I agree, it seems like the refs just want their money and get out of there. It is ridiculous sometimes what they let go.

My thinking is just go out there and don't try to take it so seriously and have fun. By having a loose attitude and just playing for fun you will see your production go up. :)

As an official in Canada..

When I went to my original 'rules emphasis' clinic we were taught a sort of step by step guide to hooking..

1) Defensive player (no puck) has stick that becomes parallel with offensive players body

2) Defensive player lifts stick so that it is touching offensive players body therefore entering the 'danger zone'

3) The hookin or reduction of movement by the offensive player occurs....hooking, pushing with stick, really just impeding the offensive players progress

finally....I have found in the pst 2 years I've been calling a shitload more hooking calls.

& Wullymc....I'm not sure why you dislike the officials in the Ottawa Region but I'd say a very small percentage of officials are really just there for the money. I'm there due to the fact I love it and am trying to get to the highest level possibly. Unfourtanetly you've had a bad run-in.

Don't take it out on all of us...we're like the police...one big collective united family.
