Winter outdoor roller league

my local (NYC) outdoor men's roller hockey league is playing this fall/winter. i wanted to get anyone's experiences they might have playing in a winter league.

i'm fairly pessimistic that the rink will be in any condition to skate on with any confidence once the snow/ice sets in, but i'm willing it get it the ol college try. B)

I played in the 104 the last season before they tore up the rink. I'm not playing this fall (3 ice leagues) but I wanted to. When the conditions won't permit play, the games will be postponed. The surface at that rink gets rather slick when wet, and even a light drizzle can make a game be called.

Justin, who runs the league (and is an MSHer) is a stand up guy, and he'll do everything in his power to keep things running smoothly and on schedule.

looks like the 1st games will be played this weekend, ours being on sunday. 'll be good to get playing since it's been a chore getting things rolling. there's been oodles of delays that have pushed the start date back to Dec from Oct.

the rink is asphalt with a green thick paint on top which makes it smooth...kind of like the outdoor basketball court surfaces. as long as the surface is dry the rink has been pretty darn good, although i guess as before if it gets a slight mist on it your sliding out all over the place.

i guess there's another coating that needs to be put down once it's warm enough to permit. i've just switched up to soft wheels to try and preserve grip as best as possible.

just seems that games will get called more often than not since the season is starting off so late and the chance of crappy weather is higher.

i agree Justin is a good dude. i've pissed him off a bit though. i've been berating him with emails about all the stuff that's been happening.

I'm playing on 3 ice teams and I couldn't get a buddy to join the league with me this time around. I'll probably join up the next time around.

That green painted surface was also used at the college point rink that was built a couple of years ago. sick surface- it's almost as good as skating on sportcourt. I think it's the same stuff that was down on the rink before, just with a different color.

we played year-round a little further north (Monroe) with I believe a similar surface...at that point I was using wheels with more of a profile since durometer didn't seem to matter as much as surface area..and sometimes mixing 2 durometers ..ie 82&78 seemed to work well on any sort of concrete, coated or uncoated..

skating in any sort of rain or mist on inline is all about keeping weight within your hips...shorter strides etc..think more manuverability than speed (a good lesson learned at the NYC 100k race in Prospect Park in 96 when the Tropical Storm came through...)

Not to thread jack but. Are you guys playing at the rink by the Throgs Neck Bridge? I am from very east on Long Island, and I pass by that rink every time I go back and forth to school and home. I have wanted to play on it since I was like 7 and passed it, but never made the trip with some buddies. How is that rink?

nope. the rink by the throgs neck (fort totten) is wrecked.

the league is in glendale, near the jackie robinson parkway. Guys have started playing pickup there again because they just redid the rink, but i dont know what nights.

there's a rink just off the 20th ave. exit on the whitestone expressway that we play at like 4 nights a week as well.

there's usually pick up games at the Glendale rink (farmers oval) every weekend with some people showing up on saturdays and usually a much bigger turn out on sunday (3 goalies last weekend.)

the league is starting on sunday so if you want some pickup id say come on saturday.

Seems like a very good way to upgrade a normal outdoor asphalt rink's surface.

not exactly sure, it is much better than just asphalt since it is pretty think and fills in all the holes and makes it much nicer to skate on. but from what i've heard there really should be another clear coat ontop.

Is the rink easy to get to by car or LIRR? I live out in Suffolk county when I'm home from school in the winter and sometimes I am just looking for a good game of school yard hockey which is hard to find in my town. I have a few guys that I know would play, but usually with the 5 guys there is like 12 who have never picked up a stick in their life and don't even skate and the game just isn't the same. Since the surface seems pretty smooth I assume you use puck out there too right?

yeah, no friggin balls on the rink...it's nice and smooth.

LIRR isnt around, if you have a car take the Grand Central to the Jackie Robinson...use the map i posted above for directions from there.

I recall seeing one there the last time I was in NYC.

yep. I wasn't a fan of the surface when I first started going there, but i've learned to live with it. it's also easier to get to than Farmer's Oval for me, and I know the guys that play there.

I'd venture out to either Sportime or Skatesafe on Long Island. They're about 10 minutes apart from each other, and considered to be the best around. Depending on where you are in the city, it'll be around 45 minutes +/- a few.

are there pick up games there? I haven't played roller hockey in years on a rink unless its street puck I would have so much fun playing in full equipment again. Although it would mess with my ice game every time I play street puck I pull moves I do on ice and always fall on my behind.

Outdoor rink in Chapetto Park, Astoria, 21st St. below the Triborough Bridge

This used to be the best skate around- every saturday. They've since moved it over to a different location, but afaik, it's still a great skate. new location is at 36th ave. and 28th street. Haven't been there in ages as i work saturdays.

Outdoor rink in George Harvey Park, Whitestone, alongside the Whitestone Expressway a couple blocks south of 14th Ave. Reported in February 2007 to be heavily used by youth league activity, but there are opportunities for pick-up games Wednesday and Sunday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings and pick-up practice on Thursday evenings.

this is where i usually skate. the youth league no longer uses it, but we have nets and usually at least one goalie.

between the salt water coming off the bay and the decrease in roller hockey players everywhere, the city has let the rink die. It's dangerous to skate hard there, a game would be a risk, wheels and blades would be chewed up in 1 outing.

very sad. That was my home rink for many years.

I've heard everyone has moved on to the Whitestone rink now.
