Does Vibration come from fiberglass?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I was wondering if sticks that are primarily made of fiberglass have off extreme vibration issues? Is it the graphite that dampens the vibrations? I was unsure because I have a stick that is primarily made of fiberglass (composite stick) and the vibration on it is horrendous. It is so bad that I feel I can stickhandle better when the blade is split. Any help?

Chris

It could be because it's hollow, too. Wood has a natural resonance and is a solid peice of material. Graphite is woven together and hollow. When TPS made their anti-vibration stuff, wasn't their solution more to fill the stick with some sort of foam? Buzz Lightbeer (stick-ho to the max) might know.

Yep...it's not just the material...but the fact that it is hollow. Dampening the vibration is usually accomplished by filling in the shaft with the rubber or foam, which serves as a catalyst to absorb that vibration.

I believe Kevlar also has excellent vibration absorbing properties to it. I know for a for a fact that Easton does market to this in their specs for kevlar wrapped sticks. How much it actually helps, I can't really tell a huge difference between kevlar wrapped sticks vs non.

Rubber/gel/wood dampens the vibration.

Absolutely...

Those are materials that ARE rigid or solid, as such, they will dampen noise and vibration.

Once they are made hollow all bets are off.

The "hollow" chamber can create accoustic sound and(as you said) vibration.

Basic physics: The harder the substance, the greater the return.

Simple answer: Yes, fibreglass is a rigid substance (as is Kevlar) and can cause "vibration".

The ultimate question is...

can you make it work for you?
