Tapered shaft too narrow for blade

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a TPS R2, tried putting in a tapered tps woody, was too tight and got stuck halfway, next tried a synthesis, doesn't even start to go into shaft. Anybody with an idea to get around this, or am I stuck with a shaft that will take the random blade that has a narrower tenon than others?

I have with another tapered shaft heated the shaft to get a little bit more expansion, but as the shaft cools, the blade tenons starts to bulge and you can see the bulging at the end of the shaft which makes me suspect the structural integrity of the shaft has been compromised.

Heating a shaft up so it will warp and accept the blade isn't the way to go about it. If it's a woodie blade, just work on the tenon until you get the right size you need.

I just tried again with an XV blade, still a no go, the thing is, I've got a stash of composite tapers and that one woody. Do you think I can cut maybe and inch off and see if the taper opens up a bit?

Myself, I wouldn't do anything to alter a shaft to accommodate blades but I also haven't used this particular shaft so maybe/hopefully someone who has can be of help.

Just in general though I wouldn't do something to compromise the integrity of the shaft for a blade. I've had shafts that were virginal and couldn't take most blades, so I'd leave them be with whatever blade fit.

Are you heating the shaft at all? Most everyone will take a heat fun to the shaft to open it up a bit. If it's still not fitting...got a rasp file?

Since my incident with my XV shaft and the bulging, I have tried not to heat my shafts unless it is very close to fitting and I need the extra expansion room. The woody was close so I will try it again tomorrow and try hitting the shaft at the same time to get that little extra expansion. Maybe after getting the woody in there, it might expand a little after a couple of games of use, kinda wishful thinking there.

Are you suggesting I file the inside of the shaft? I've owned two TPS shafts to date and have found them to have thinner shaft walls then others, making them much lighter than others too, so I would rather not file them down, I leaning towards cutting maybe 1/4" at a time and hoping the taper opens up, otherwise the shaft is kinda useless as I was looking for a replacement to my Redlite, which this old R2 feels exactly the same and probably is in design but in tapered form.

Worst case I can see is if the cutting of the taper doesn't open it up after maybe 2", I can just flip it around and put in a standard blade. But I have a feeling, cutting the taper will open up the taper a little. But I will stray from cutting it until I can see if anyone has anymore ideas because I'm out.

Junior, just tried the woody again, but this time heated the shaft for a bit of extra room and it went in(snug fit), and maybe once the shaft cools down, I will check for bulges and the shaft might "open" up enough for my synthesis and XV blades, so for the time, this shaft is good until this woody gives. :(
