Buying new skates

Recommended Posts

I bought used skates about a year ago, but I knew that they were too big because I wear a 7.5 shoe and the skate was size 7.5. I then read that skates should fit about 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than your shoe size. However, after getting fitted I ended up buying a JR Size 4.5 EE Nike Bauer XXXX skate. Is this typical, or do most people buy skates that are only 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller?

I did the exact same thing LOL. I was the same size. I bought a 7.5 CCM Vector 2.0. The I got properly sized at Pro Hockey Life, and currently have a 5.5 in One90s. Yes, it is supposed to be 1.5 smaller than your shoe size. If not, then around that.

That's strange, really strange...Honestly never heard of a 3 size difference brother I don't know what to tell you. I wear 1.5 size smaller in NBH, 1 size smaller in Graf.

For some reason my 7.5 didn't hurt my feet after a while, although the side of my arch was killing me for a while but now its ok. Im curious to see how my skating will be affecting if anything.

Did you go 1 and 1/2 sizes smaller then a Nike shoe? Because Nike shoes run small. I wear a 12 in Nikes But my ONE90'S are 9 1/2.

feet are definitely a funny thing, for sure.

i've got 10-10.5 shoes, depending on the company, but i rock 7-7.5 skates.

i'm another 3-size wonder.

... or weirdo. :S

I wear size 8.5 in most shoes (nike, adidas, asics, etc). I wear a size 6.5 Bauer Supreme 4000 and size 6.5 Micron Mega Air90.

Thus the importance of fitting before purshasing. It is still too vague to compare with shoe size, I mean, which shoe size in particular, for example I wear the following footwear:

My classy Chuck Taylor All Star Converse in black - Size 13

Sketchers - Size 13

Nike 180 - Size 14

Nike Alvord series - Size 13

Dr. Scholls shoes - Size 12

And my Kor Shift2 are size 12.

Even between Nike footwear there's a size difference, so the best thing is to fit them, and regardless of size, pick up what is comfortable for you :)

hahaha! I did the same as I bought Vapor VII's (2004 maybe) in a size 10D as that's what felt good but started noticing a few bad habits creeping into my skating as I starting playing more hockey (as opposed to just skating). I just bought Vapor XXV's in size 8.5EE and can concentrate on the ice/game as opposed to what my feet are doing. The VII's were comfy, but man, my feet were swimming in them!

Sidenote: my dad has Bauer Panthers (size 9.5) from 1983 or so and they seem smaller than my 8.5's

I wear 2.5 sizes smaller (but do remember it will vary by company as I would wear a different size in Mission than CCM, and in CCM different by Tack and Vector series). HOWEVER, thing to remember with hockey skates you want a small/tight fit for nimble maneuvers & performance. However, in street shoes many prefer a larger, looser fit for comfort.

With myself especially, I wear a size 12 instead of the 11.5 I should wear because I like the extra room to accomodate my bone spurs/abnormality on the side of my big toe.

Just get fit by a pro and you should be good to go.

That's the case with me. I wear a larger shoe for comfort, so my skate size is about 2.5 sizes smaller.

I wear DC Shoes, I just find it strange

I wear a 10.5 in DC's and got a size 8.5D xxii's, that's two shoe sizes. Shoes such as DC, Emerica, Etnies, etc. skateboarding branded shoes are made smaller because they have extra padding for when skateboarding. In running and basketball shoes I only wear a 9.5 or 10 depending on the brand. So really, three sizes seems like alot, but I see it being possible.

When they say shoe size, they mean dress shoe size and not sports shoes (nikes etc). I wear a 9 dress shoes, 10.5 for sports shoes and 7.5-8 for skates.

Absolutely correct. This topic is also a perfect example of why I say to keep trying on smaller skates until you find a size that is too small, then go one step back up. It's amazing how often people could/should be wearing a smaller size.

That's what I did based on your advice chadd, just from reading on here. I went with 10.5 instead of 11 because of that. I'm a happy camper. :)

And by camper, I mean at the blueline... That's based on JR's advice. ;)

My regular shoes are typically 10.5. In Nike shoes, I fit 11. My One90's are 8.5.

I take a smaller size in one90s too....they run a bit smaller than rest of the NBH line.

I wear a 7-7.5 shoe size, had some old missions in 6.5(bought on ebay) but they were too sloppy, I could feel them shift when skating hard.

Found a pair of used Vapor Shifts in 4.5EE, at first I was like, man those are small, I tried them on and my toes feathered out nicely at the toe cap, and for $40(the store was relocating), the runner had plenty of steel and the holder had no major structural damage, just a couple minor scuffs here and there on the boot itself so I thought it was a steal considering they normally go for $250+, worst case, just sell them again. And junior skates are cheaper too.:D
