Picked up some Micron Mega Air90s and red stripe 10-90s - pics added

Recommended Posts

I always wanted these skates back in the day, but my parents would never spring for $400 skates or whatever they cost back then. Over the past few weeks I managed to pick up a few steals on ebay. 3 pairs of skates, I'll never need another skate in my life hopefully lol. I picked up two identical pairs of Micron Mega Air 90s and a pair of the 10-90s with the red stripe and the old school V2 thin blades. All of them are brand new. I picked up the Air90s for $40 and $41, and the red stripe 10-90s for $55.

I've had one pair of the Air90s profiled and I've worn them in 2 or 3 games now and what's amazed me most about them is the comfort. From the moment I put them on, I've had no discomfort whatsoever. This is actually my first pair of brand new skates and of course I always hear guys complaining about how uncomfortable brand new skates are, but thus far I've experienced nothing like that. I imagine the 10-90s might give me some though, I haven't skated in them yet but wearing them around the house for an hour at a time I've noticed that the heel seems VERY narrow on the 10-90 and caused some minor discomfort, then my heel got a little numb and the discomfort went away but the pressure was still noticeable. I actually am surprised at how narrow the heel is on them because I have an EXTREMELY narrow foot and I still felt like my heel was being squeezed in there.

anyhow, this is my first post here and I just thought I'd share. Excited about having some skates I always wanted even if it is like 13 years after I originally wanted them lol.

Are you going to keep the v2 steel on the 10-90s? If so, be very careful with who sharpens them. I had these blades on a pair of Bauer 2000s back in the very early 1990s. They're a lot easier to "screw up" than standard blades since the surface being sharpened is half as wide as a standard TUUK blade. I recall several times I needed to return to skate shops to have my sharpening job redone. Also, the thinner runners bent easier than conventional blades.

My next skates definitely had standard TUUKs on them.

One of the Air90s has had the white vinyl turn yellowish because of exposure to sunlight on the display shelf according to the seller. I'm not sue what I'll do with that skate pair, I might paint them black or something - or perhaps I'll leave it because it's not like it matters what my skates look like while I'm playing. You can see in one of the pics my Bauer Supreme 4000s that the Megas are replacing.

Not sure if I'm going to keep the V2s on them or not. I've heard of the difficulties you describe. I might pull them off and put some regular steel on there. I likely won't be wearing these skates for quite a while so I've got time to figure that out I guess.

Just curious, when you had yours did you feel that the thinner V2 blade had any positive effect, or was it just fun gimmick.

I thought the V2 blades made for a little less strain on my knees, but honestly I thought they were more trouble than they were worth because of all the extra work that went into making them perform properly.

I noticed your 10-90s are 7Ds, my size! Very nice!

That's a really nice collection of classics right there. You will thank yourself later for getting more than what you probably need from a functional standpoint.

They don't make them like that anymore.
