TPS pro patterns

Recommended Posts

Hello, I heard about some pro stock TPS sticks at EWH. I'm interested in buying some, but am not farmiliar at all with TPS pro patterns. I plan on calling them soon, but I find it hard because sometimes you might get a hockey monkey type employee who might not know much about sticks, curves, etc. I haven't dealt with EWH before so I don't know what their customer service is like. Anyway, I'm here just looking for the names of some patterns that I might like, so I could just say do you have a p31 for example rather than trying to explain what type of curve I'm looking for. The specs I'm looking for are left handed and my favorite curve is the sakic pattern, but I'm looking for any open mid curve. I'm quite versatile when it comes to curves though, I don't mind drury type curves either, or lidstrom-ish patterns too. I'm also looking at whip and regular flex if that helps. So, if anyone knows the TPS pro version of any of the curves I listed (especially the sakic or open mid curves) it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

EWH is definitely more knowledgeable than HM or HG. If you're not getting the answers you are looking for, ask for Jason.

The p31 is a heel that has a neutral face, curve is similar to a drury, but the blade isn't open... There should be pics on the website.

Isn't the P13 more closed like that than the P31? Unless the couple P31s I've owned are mutants and unlike the rest, it's a pretty good-sized heel with a lot of shovel on it.

The P13 I had was more shallow and more open than my P31

EHW has a lot of sold out products listed on their website. It helps make the site look more full than it otherwise would be. P31 isn't a neutral face, not even close. I should know, I've been using it for a couple years and have half a dozen or so spares in the closet. What's with the rash of people posting really bad info lately?

I found the pic I got from EWH a while ago, here it is.

IDK, looks neutral to me.

If it was neutral, you wouldn't see the face of the blade, just the top down profile.

Chadd, that's what we have you and JR and a few others for.. keep the riff raff honest. That being said, I've recently been turned on to TPS and am interested in the Sakic version of a TPS blade. What is their match?

I just said p31 for example, it's just one i've heard of on here before. Does anyone know any of the TPS pro patterns that are open mid curves? And I will ask for Jason if I'm not getting adequate assistance.

Thanks guys!

TPS Nash

Or P119

Thanks guys!

P27 is a small mid with just a bit of loft.

Chadd, you and I are never going to agree on how a face angle is described. I just don't see how it makes sense that "seeing the bottom" of the blade from overhead helps describe the curve, it doesn't take in account of the twisting of the blade after the initial curve.

I think Easton describes their blade similar to the way I do. In my opinion, it just makes more sense. But we've discussed how we differ in opinion on this.

It just doesn't make sense to me to consider 98% of blades open when you can classify the twisting of the blade after the initial curve. Explaining the differences between curves like a Datysuk and a Sakic would be an example.

With Brad Janson still heading up Pro Services, I'd say the following list is still pretty much the same as far as stock pro patterns as when I was a pro rep there (1999-2004):

P05 = Retail Lidstrom

P09 = Retail Modano/Forsberg

P11 = Retail Messier

P13 = Pro Sundin (1st Gen)

P14 = Retail Shanahan

P16 = Retail Tucker

P19 = Pro Yzerman (1st Gen)/Drury Retail

P27 = Easton Darby

P31 = Pro Roenick

P91 = Pro Sakic

P119 = Retail Nash (1st Gen), Retail Sakic (2nd Gen)

Do you know the differences btw the p14 and p38?

Neutral has always meant no or virtually no loft, no matter what manufacturer uses the term. The P31 doesn't come anywhere close to that description. It's a heel wedge, though it has less loft than a Drury, Lidstrom or other very open curve. The term "neutral" has nothing to to do with the difference between a Sakic and Datsyuk. I would venture to call that the "twist" but nobody makes a distinction like that in their product descriptions.

31 left 13 right

As you can tell by the hosel angles, it isn't perfect but should give some idea on the differences.

Isn't Easton the manufacter that lists the Iginla as closed? Or is that a product of online retailers?

The Iginla is one of the few blades that you can see the toe of the blade close although you can see the bottom of the blade from overhead. I just find this way describes the curve at better depth, instead of what I consider to be a 2-D description. That 2-D description can be as diseptive as a picture.

Wow, that p31 is just beautiful.

EDIT: Chadd, what's the lie on the p31?

5

TBL:

I asked our DB guys to make a change to better describe the lofts offered on blades. I think we need to make some changes in an effort to make it easier for people to understand.

Here is my suggestion:

Remove face angle

Add "Loft Type"; twist or wedge

Add "Amount of Loft"; Mild, Moderate Severe

Twist would be Sakic types of blade while wedge would be Drury types of blades. More descriptors could be added to refine the descriptions even more.

If anyone has suggestions as to a better way to describe it, please fire away.

That sounds great. I like it, takes away some of the confusion(I know "my" way is confusing)... I think it sounds like a nice compromise that will do what's important, help those looking for answers.

I remember trying to figure out what all that stuff meant when I started skating out, it was tough. Anything that can be done to make that process easier is a great idea.

If we can get some changes made, I will put together a description of what the terms mean as well. Then we just have to get people to use it.

I think it makes a lot more sense... and you know how certain sites like to copy MSH. It just might catch on!!!

Few people think more than two or three times a year; I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.---George Bernard Shaw

In looking for that quote I found a new quote for my signature.

haha, love the quotes.

A quote I live by is very similar but instead of "think" it's "drink" and instead of "once or twice a week" it's "once or twice a day." :P

An oldie, but here's an RP next to the P31:

For what it's worth the "Styles" that I had was exactly the same as the P31.
