Instigator rule is done for?

Recommended Posts

If the refs want, they don't have to give the unwilling participant a fighting major and can kick the other player out for intent to injure. I rarely see the instigator rule called and there are ways to penalize players for instigating without that "official rule".

The unwilling participant, once he drops the gloves and defends himself has to get a fighting major, unless the NHL puts in a "self-defense" clause in the rulebook.

The ref has the option if the unwilling doesn't throw punches. If he does, they can still tack on the intent to injure penalty, or an unsportsmanlike for starting the fight and eject him. The instigator rule is rarely used now, and usually causes more issues than it fixes.

I see it called plenty when a teammate comes to the aid of a guy who just got railed.

Oops...it won't let me edit my previous post for some reason.

I was just thinking how much more ice time Laraque would get if this situation took place.

Personally, I like the strategy involved in the fighting but I could do w/o most of it. I'm not one to cruise the hockey fights on YouTube. I like to watch goals instead.

I agree with Chadd in that the NHL really needs to throw the book at the guys giving cheap shots. Obviously, when you're making millions of dollars a year, sitting for a few games isn't the end of the world. And furthermore, its pretty obvious (this year especially) that long-term suspensions are not enough of a deterrent to keep people from throwing cheap shots and dirty hits. I absolutely hate it when these players show such a disrespect for the game (and in a way, the fans too). I watched Ohlund break Mikko Koivu's leg with a two-hander that cost Mikko like 23 games or so. Ohlund was suspended for 4 and lost about 70k in salary I guess. But what is 70k to these guys? IMO, Ohlund should sit a lot longer and his team should be fined. The league has to find a way to hold these guys accountable and create a deterrent. The last thing the NHL needs as it recovers from the lockout is a bad reputation brought on by idiots like Ohlund.

I realize that the league doesn't really like the idea of fighting, and some fans don't either. My only thought with dropping the instigator rule is just to see if more fights would happen, and see if there would be a greater or lesser number of suspensions for cheap shots. Maybe the only deterrent for idiots like Downie, Ohlund, etc is the possibility of someone kicking the living crap out of them.
