Where can I get extra padding for shoulder pads?

First, a little background. About 10 years ago when I was first learning how to skate/stop I broke my humerous bone and partially separated my shoulder. I recently joined an adult "learn to play" league and let's just say I wipe out alot. Whenever I fall on my left shoulder there is no pain. But when I fall on my right shoulder, the one that was partially separated, it doesn't take too big of a fall for it to hurt like a bitch and leave me sore the next few days. My shoulder pads are already pretty bulky, but I was wondering if there was some additional padding I could add and if some where can I get it from?

Was the original injury a separation or subluxation? A separation occurs when the clavicle partially separates from the acromion process of the scapula; a subluxation is when the head of the humerus partially dislocates from the glenohumeral joint. The glenohumeral joint is where your arm rotates, the AC joint is about (on an average-sized man) about 3-4" medial from that point.

If you're looking to modify your shoulder pads, here's what I'm thinking of (without having actually put this into practice or tested):

Try buying some sort of medium-density foam (somewhere between internal padding of an old Spalding football helmet and a CCM HT2), cut in the shape of the shoulder cap, and cover with a layer about 1/2" to 3/4" thick so that nothing is exposed from the outside. What it would do is, if you fall on it, increase the time that the impact occurs and reduce the amount of pressure placed on the joint.

I am not exactly sure what the extent of the injury was. It wasn't until I saw a chiropractor a few years later that I realized I had issues with my shoulder. The chripractor called it a "slight seperation" made some adjustments, and my shoulder felt a whole lot better. Except for now whenever I land on it.

I was also thinking about adding foam and have planned a trip to Play it again Sports. But another option might be a shoulder support, like this.

Perhaps I should give that a go first?

I wanna say that no shoulder pad will prevent every shoulder dislocation. I dislocated a shoulder in HS when I plowed into the boards, and I was rocking Douglas's, which were basically football pads. You're better off just being careful than adding to the bulk.

Maybe your shoulder pads are to big for you?? Try to get a pair with shoulder caps closer to your shoulders.

Aye, get the fit checked by someone who knows a thing or two about it. If you get any hint from your coach or LHS worker, find someone else. Worst bet, get your brother/mother/wife/girlfriend to take a few pics and let the great wealth of knowledge here tell you if they're protecting correctly.

When I ram the glass or fall with my shoulder into the ice, I barely notice it except for the change in motion. If the shoulder isn't properly in the cap you can either ram the side of the cap into your bicep or have the other edge hit your shoulder. See if you can borrow a buddy's set and see if a different fit will put the padding in the right place.

Edit- As hook said, it won't protect 100% and physical therapy to repair the scar tissue or whatever's wrong is probably the better choice. Even with big RBK shoulders I hit my elbow while falling and it popped my shoulder, still hurts when I bend it wrong or pop it on a big backhand whack.

The big question is "What exactly is going on internally?" I re-read the original post and one question popped up in my head. You said that when you fall on the shoulder, it causes a good deal of pain. Are you falling on the arm and it causes pain in the shoulder, or are you actually landing flush on the shoulder?

Maybe your shoulder pads are to big for you?? Try to get a pair with shoulder caps closer to your shoulders.

It probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference.

A shoulder dislocation comes from an unusual application of force to the glenohumeral joint (normally) in a direction other than laterally. Hockey shoulder pads aren't really designed to prevent dislocations; they're more to protect against contusions and lacerations to the upper body.

That's a good question. When I fall down things happen so fast that I don't really remember exactly what I landed on. I can remember two incidents - one where I landed directly on the shoulder (I felt a stinging pain in the shoulder right after I dinged it, felt ok after few days), and another when I landed on my back. Not sure what hit the ice first when I landed on my back, but the pain was more sore than stinging. That particular incident happened on Sunday. And while I feel ok for the most part today (thursday), I did wake up experience upper arm soreness. The shoulder feels fine.

I had separated my shoulder this year as well and I also wear something under my shoulder pads. Its basically like extra padding shaped into a shoulder pad form, its tough to explain but maybe someone else here knows what I'm talking about. My friend gave me his and I'm not sure where he got it but I'll look for it online.
